$326.00 teeth cleaning!!!! 1 Attachment(s) When I got Sophie two years ago, she was in need of a dental cleaning. I had it done and she did not need any extractions. Now just 2 years later, she had to get 9 extractions. Her breath was terrible, so I took her to the vet and they said she was grade 4-5 dental disease! I am so surprised that it happened so fast. I feel so bad. I am starting a dental routine for all 3 girls now. :( |
Aww, poor Sophie. A very good reminder to practice good dental hygiene. I'm working to do a better job on the back teeth. |
I feel really guilty. Hope my mistake will inspire others to brush! |
I just got an estimate from my canine Dentist and a dental cleaning with no extractions was $361.00...each...and I have 3  My dentist charges $65.00 to clean my teeth...I know he doesn't have to put me under or anything but come on...$361.00 is a bit pricey...and that's with no discount for multiple cleanings. |
Lily's was $454 for a cleaning and 4 extractions. |
That price included the pre-op testing, IV line, intubation, anesthesia, cleaning, extractions, etc., right? I think that is about what I am charged for Tibbe's but he doesn't have extractions now as I have been brushing his teeth for almost 2 years. You can do it - just make it part of your daily routine and they get used to it, too. |

By the way, your Yorkie is darling. |

All of these prices look to be well within what is an acceptable charge, especially if they include blood work and xray. Ellie's oral surgery (with 9 extractions) was $600. |
Is there a way to 'twilight' them so they are relaxed during a cleaning rather than put them completely under? Seems that would be safer for the dog and cheaper for the owner. I understand putting them under if they need extractions but it seems there should be a better way to do just a cleaning. |
Man! I am feeling like I got off cheap now! Poor Sophie still paid tho. I wish there was a better and easier way to care for their teeth. |

Some of the drugs that put them most of the way out but where they are still slightly with it - not all safe. Gas anesthesia is definitely a good way to go. |
$288.00 for two yorkie cleanings! My vet's office is running a "special". $99.00 dental. If you want an IV, it is an additional 45 dollars. They are really promoting good dental hygiene! So both of my baby boys (they are a year and a half old) went in. Beautiful clean white teeth now! (They were only a grade one) I tried the Tropiclean religiously for a month prior to the cleaning, because it was supposed to dissolve the plaque. Did not work! So I've recently switched to Biotene. Results to be determined. Anyway, my best advice is to put their toothbrush and toothpaste in your bathroom. At night, when you brush your teeth-brush theirs. I love it! ;) |
I got a quote for Pfeiffer recently bc she has one retained baby tooth that wasn't there at her spay. From 3 different Vet offices, my quote was $1200+. Not cool. |

Jubilee had one retained canine. I gave her raw bones, bully sticks...and wiggled it with my finger and it came out on it's own. |
Just had 3 yorkies and 1 biewer's teeth cleaned. They also trimmed their nails. My vet sedates them. No anesthesia is used. When I went to pick them up, I was afraid of what they were going to charge me. I was pleasantly surprised, $40.00 each! Their teeth look beautiful and white and there's a definite improvement in their breath! :D |

Try Petzlife Oral care it helps with bad breath and cleaning teeth and I recommend the gel rather than the spray. |
Did he say what he uses for sedation? |

Petzlife is used without the toothbrush and my dogs love it. Check out the feedback on it. It works pretty good if you don't have years and years of plaque build up and if so you better buy a scraper and do it yourself little by little. the Petzlife oral care loosens that plaque up. The part I like the best is their breath smells a whole lot better yippeee. I cost 30 buck in store and about 10 to 15 on ebay. Good luck all with your dogs teeth. My yorkie girl attacks the toothbrush and tries to brush her teeth herself with that stuff on it. Salmon oil they like the best. |

No because there'd still be way too great of a risk of the vet or tech getting bitten (probably even more so if they were under mild anesthetic because they'd get scared and clench their jaw). Unfortunatly pet dentals are expensive because of everthing that goes along with it - IV, bloodwork, etc. As a formor vet tech who has assisted in MANY dentals - it's HARD work and takes a really long time. The time alone (cost of anesthesia and paying a tech by the hour) is a large part if the cost even for just a cleaning. Start to finish (from bloodwork and IV placement to recovery of the pet and clean up of the work area) you are talking about 2 hours time and if there's extractions, longer - we had a 4 hour dental on a 7 year old german shephard once . If our pups would open up and say "ahhhh" it would be sooo much cheaper LOL. Brush brush brush those teeth :D |
I've heard horror stories around here of $700 for a cleaning. At our last visit, Lucy's teeth looked good (I'm guilty of not brushing); so the vet recommended Oravet. This is a waxy-like substance you put on their teeth to prevent plaque. She HATED IT and wasn't herself for 2 days! I think she hated that waxy feeling on her teeth. Vet said it was made for humans but they didn't like it either . . . so marketed it for dogs. I think I'm going to have to try brushing. I don't want to put that stuff on her any more. |

And not only is the tech's time being paid for by the client, but also another tech/assistant monitoring the pup, and the vet who has blocked that time in case something goes wrong/and if extractions are needed/and to do the dental exam, etc. And it takes a looooong time to put in charges and do discharge papers and update the owner. Mine didn't like Oravet the time I tried it either, plus I personaly think it's more of a pain than brushing - you have to dry the tooth off first etc. ugh forget it lol |
