Raw fed Yorkies less prone to Fleas??? Hey all.... Those of you who feed any type of raw....are our babies less prone to fleas?? I've read it on here a bit and also googled it and it hasn't been proven (to my knowledge) so wanted to ask. Do you all have a flea problem?? I have NEVER had a problem and I do NOT apply topicals, mine are on Sentinel which is an ingested flavor tab which kills eggs. Just wondering.....:) I am taking my 2 to NYC for 3 months this summer and am thinking I should get them on something stronger but am scared:(!!!!!! Viv |
I have heard that said on raw feeding sites and don't know if it's true or not. I can only tell you that I have been feeding raw for 3 years and I use no chemicals of any sort on my 3 yorkies. No frontline, revolution etc and I have never had fleas. Now that I've said that, I'll probably get them tomorrow.... |
No fleas yet I've read that too- have no idea if it's true or not. Here's my experience: I have been raw feeding for 1 year (Hobo is almost 15 months) and we've not had fleas. I'm in the same camp with TDJMOM and do not use any chemicals on my dog. Not sure if it's luck, diet, or what but so far so good. Hope that luck doesn't run out tomorrow :). |
I've never dealt w/ fleas on any of our dogs ever. My dads dogs have not been on topicals for probably 6 months now (they just keep forgetting, for one thing). I took a break with Jackson but ended up using some again simply for the ticks, but even when he was off meds, never any fleas. But they are not raw fed and have never had fleas either... I just wonder if they're not common in our area? |

I know ticks are still out there during the winter, but I held the Frontline until now. |

Ticks are just sooo bad in this area, plus I live out in the "country" so I'm sure there's even more of them. Ticks have always been a common part of our life with our dogs, LOL. But I always thought they died for the winter but apparently not. So I guess I'm gonna have to keep putting meds on him during the winter... but fleas have never been an issue (even when not on meds....) |
Hmmmmmmmmmmm I'm hoping the theory is TRUE!!!!! :):) :) Viv |
Oh WOW, Viv, this is the most amazing side effect of feeding raw...I live in S.E.Texas, the home of fleas as big as grasshoppers (but everything is bigger in Texas ;)) I said something to a friend of mine, a few months ago, about the kidz never having fleas, and she told me that, exclusively, raw fed dogs usually don't get fleas...I do not use topicals, or anything, whatsoever, on my pups for fleas....In the summer, I spray my yard w/organic cedar oil, which would kill fleas, but I do it for ants...I was telling a friend of mine, that feeds raw, that for some reason, the pups didn't get fleas, even when we walked in the neighborhood...She was the one that told me, raw fed pups don't get fleas, and I was blown away! |
I certainly hope this is true...I haven't had an issue, but I haven't really been in a flea invested area in the last few years. But I wonder. If it's due to the Raw diet...then what about wildlife? They eat raw...but I know I've seen wildlife shows where wolves, coyotes etc have fleas. Do you think it might also be immune system related?? |
I heard all the sugar in kibble and processed dog foods is what attracts the fleas. Maybe that's why our babies don't get em???? A mystery!!!!! :) V |
Anyone else have an input??? I am SO INTRIGUED by this...... Viv |
It would be a hard theory to prove. There are many kibble fed dogs who don't get them. You'd have to put a large number of kibble fed and raw fed dogs in an area with fleas to find out, I guess. And if they are less prone to them, then does that go for all raw fed dogs or just prey model fed or just premade fed.. If it's the sugar (which I imagine isn't proven anywhere), then any dog eating food without carbs should have the same benefit - so it wouldn't be that it's raw. |
We haven't had any fleas in our home or yard for almost 10 years and my dogs eat mostly kibble and veggies, occasional cooked meat. I don't use any flea preventative except for something the yard man used several years ago in the fertilizer just once. My next door neighbor has 3 dogs and there are 2 dogs in the homes immediately across the alley, none of which is see scratching as if with fleas. |
I've never in my life used any chemicals on my dogs, and they have never had a flea or tick. I have always home cooked, so I think that makes a world of difference. When we travel or camp, I spray them with home made repellents to be safe. |
