Post operation care tips?? So, my sweet little baby boy Peyton has his surgery tomorrow (Thursday.) :( God willing it will all go well and he can come home on Friday. This is a surgery to his left hind leg due to a fractured growth plate. He will be on crate rest for 6-8 weeks +/-. I know some of you have been through surgery with your pups. The surgeon will be giving me post op care instructions, but I would really like to hear from all of you as well. What worked for you, what didn't. Tips on giving pain meds, keeping comfortable, etc. Needless to say I am worried sick for him, but am trying to cope...and being proactive works for me. So, any advice or tips would be very much appreciated. Thanks! |
Saying prayers for Peyton. Sammy had stomach surgery in 2002 and I kept him confined to the kitchen and dining room. That way he couldn't jump on anything, although I don't think he really felt like jumping around. He was a little droopy when he came home. My kids were younger then so I told them no running in the house and to speak softly so they wouldn't get Sammy wound up. I hope and pray all is well with Peyton's surgery. Sending hugs to you both! |
First and foremost, as best you can, try to calm yourself and be very relaxed around little Peyton when caring for him, as you know he will pick up on your worry and tension and internalize it himself. That is one of the hardest parts to me of dealing with my little dog is trying to learn to stay calm, as I am a worrier and usually very tense when he's not well, but I sure try. |
Thank you for the tips. Luckily, I already ordered the soft collar from momtohotrod as a "just in case." He likes his crate pretty well, as long as it is right next to me. Just can't wait to get him home!!!! |
