Anesthesia and other questions My tiny girl Mochi is 3yrs old and weighs 2.6 lbs. I got her a couple months ago and she has a couple issues - I want to have her spayed but she is so tiny. Also the vet quoted me a price of around $700. She needs her teeth cleaned and a few baby teeth removed. Is that too many procedures at once? I'm just afraid of the anesthesia. Additionally, I think she has leather ear too - how can that be prevented? I started applying lotrimin to her ears today |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new girl! She is a tiny one that's for sure. My yorkie was spayed at 6 months old and she was just under 3lbs and did great. Since your girl is a few years old and you just recently got her I would have a complete blood panel and a bile acid test done to make sure she is 100% healthy. The bile acid test is to check for liver shunt which is common in yorkies and can cause huge complications with anesthesia. If you get good results back and you trust your vet with your tiny one then I say go ahead and get the spay/dental done. Discuss with your vet that the dental should only be done after the spay IF she is doing well under the anesthesia. If need be, the dental can be done on another day. Ask the vet if she uses Iso or Sevo as a gas anesthetic, if she'll have a catheter, and if she'll be on IV fluids during and after the procedure. Also ask if she will be fully monitored by a tech during the procedures and if they are comfortable doing surgery on such a tiny dog. If her bloodwork comes back a little questionable but she still needs the spay and dental you can ask to be referred to a specialty hospital. AERA in Fairfield has surgeons for the spay and now has a dentist as well. |
I already had all her shots/boosters done and the vet didn't mention anything about doing liver function tests - I'm not sure I overly trust the place especially for this. Also I'm not sure if she's charging a very high price - what's normal for a cleaning or a spay? |
I would still get the blood panel (CBC/CHEM) and the Bile Acid Test done before you schedule the surgery. You want to make sure she is 100% healthy before putting her under anesthesia. This is important for any dog but even more so since she is so small. I'm not familiar with the vet prices in Morristown. 4 years ago when I had Morgan spayed in Bergen County it ran around $300. She had a dental and extraction done a year or so later and I think the price was around $300 as well. |
Thanks for the info. I think I'll shop around and see if I find a place I feel more comfortable with. |
