Teeht cleaning and pulling I have a problem with Gucci teeths. Since last post about brushing our puppies teeth I started brushing her teeth. It haven't being easy cause she fights me and tries to brake loose. Yesterday I asked my son to hold Gucci to try to ease her brushing but of course it wasn't. Anyhow she has being having bad breath so i decided that even thou she fights I was going to do anything possible to open her mouth and look it something was wrong ;cause i have being brushing her teeth and she still has bad breath. So there it was on her teeths that need to be pull because they are the baby teeth and the other teeth had already came out, there was this black crust. I started brushing it and her gums started bleeding a bit. I also notice that the fuss from her tennis ball has being getting stuck between those teeth and was getting inside her gums. I pulled that fuss out and brushed her teeth once again. Her breath still kind of bad and her gums (only around the double teeth) is kind of red and a bit puffy. I called her vet and she will call me back tomorrow for an appointmnet. Gucci is 7 month old but hasnt being spayed yet cause she was on treatment for the ringworm and the vet wanted to finish this treatment before we did anyhting else. Maybe that is why she hasn't being eating her puppy food. Even thou she has being anything else. Any suggestions will be great appreciated. |
Carter hated anything to do with me brushing his teeth. Now -- he comes to me easily to have his teeth brushed. I think the poultry flavored toothpaste has something to do with it now. My husband is absolutely amazed at our teeth brushing ritual! Carter was 7 months old when he was neutered. His 4 canines were pulled at the same time. You won't believe how quickly the permanent canines move into place. It will be tons easier once there is no double teeth to worry about. The fuzz won't get stuck anymore. Perhaps pick up the tennis balls until after the teeth are gone. Before Carter's double teeth were pulled, he could manage to get the regular sized tennis balls in his mouth to retrieve. Now that the teeth were pulled, he can only roll them around. He is only able to retrieve his smaller tennis balls. :) |
Teeth cleaning Please share any experiences you have of having your yorkie being put under to have teeth cleaned. I'm having this done to mine on Monday but i'm a bit scared!!! |
Marie, one thing you might try in order to get Gucci's teeth brushed is using a piece of gauze instead of a toothbrush. Put a little doggie toothpaste on a small piece of gauze on your finger and just rub inside her mouth, especially the ones way back. You might just start by putting your finger in her mouth with nothing on it first and get her used to it. One of my Yorkies fights enough that the gauze is much easier than a toothbrush. Mycalibabe, I know exactly how you feel. I don't know how small your Yorkie is but as long as your vet is experienced with small dogs it should be fine. I do know the fear though. I was so afraid to do that, that I waited too long on one of ours and the bacteria has spread and she has been in renal failure since last October. That doesn't mean it will happen to yours but I learned the hard way how important it is. Also, personally I always have blood work done just prior to anesthesia. Always. That will tell your vet if she's healthy enough to tolerate it. My little dogs (Yorkies and others) go to an amazing vet for teeth cleaning. He gives i.v. fluids while they're out and they have a heart monitor, etc. Just like a people hospital!! |
I would love to take credit for this idea....but I read it on some other post....my yorkie and chihuahua also HATE brushing teeth...until I read this idea.. I put some doggie flavor toothpaste on their brushes....stick them (the toothbrushes..not the dogs) in the freezer......then, later that night ( or in the am) ..when I have a few minutes I just hold the brushes and they just chew and chew and chew. I turn the brush up and down and sideways and both sides....Not had a problem since. I realize this is not "really brushing" but it gets the job done for now! |
Thank you so much for al the advise. I still brush her theeth, she fights me, but i still do it. I have mhy son hold her and i open her mouth and brush. Of course she is trying to get loose. :aimeeyork |
Debbi, I love your idea! I can totally see my gurls chewing on the meat tasting toothpaste. I am certainly going to try this. :D |
Like I said.....I can't take credit for that idea....but I did read it somewhere on yorkie talk a while ago...... I swear there are some people on here that are geniuses!!!!!!!! |
