Red Eye Took Bear to the park this evening and as soon as we came home I noticed that his left eye is half closed. After closer look, his eye is all red!! He is scratching his eye with his paws and he blinks a lot. I don't see anything in his eye , but it is really red and poor baby keeps it half closed or even closed completely. Any ideas what could it be what should I do??? |
It sounds like trauma (corneal scratch or the like) or possibly (but less likely) conjunctivitis. Hoping there is a vet open there in the morning or you will need to go to the ER (if he is having trouble opening it, you probably should go tonight). Eyes can go bad very quickly and it can't wait until Monday. I'd be going to the ER tonight... |
I agree, take your baby to the ER vet tonight. My poor Max suffered a couple corneal ulcers recently and they are extremely painful. The sooner you see a vet, the sooner your pup will get some pain relief and the less likely there will be permanent damage. Best to put a cone on his head ASAP to prevent him from doing further damage. A visit shouldn't cost that much because they will likely do a stain test and give you an antibiotic and pain killer. Best wishes for your Bear. |
I agree sounds like he may have scratched his cornea. I had one once and it was extremely painful. I would try and get him in tonight if at all possible. I hope he feels better soon. |
I would get him to the Emergency Vet for pain relief and, if a scratch, may need antibiotics to stave off infection, all the sooner the better. Eyes are so pain sensitive. |
Luckily found a vet who works on Sunday. You were right he has corneal ulcer. The vet did a flourescein stain on his cornia and used the special black light to diagnose Bear. He gave him Vetprofen to take 1/2 tablet every 12 hrs, Tombramycin Ophtalmic solution to apply 2-3 times a day and a autogenous serum ( they made at the clinic from Bear's own blood to also apply 2-3 daily before the solution. The vet said it is good he came early, we could have had a much bigger problem if we waited . I am not too happy about giving him the painkillers , but I do understand it is very painful ( even though Bear doesn't appear to be in pain). We will take him next Sunday for a follow up visit, and by that time the vet expect his cornia to be ok. Wanted to share in case anybody else ever have a similar problem. Thank you all for you replies. |

Glad to read your update that Bear is on the mend. Painkillers make me nervous too, but they are safe and your pup will appreciate them. Let us know how things go at the follow up. Give your boy a hug from me and the Maxman. :) |
Thanks for updating. Hopefully Bear will feel much better now and heal quickly. |
Thank you for the update and so good to know the little guy is getting needed meds to get him well and keep him comfortable. It is so scary that things can go south so quickly after a fun outing. Hope that eye responds quickly. It is so good that he has a mommy that got quick care. I hate reading posts where a problem has been going on for days w/o mention of vet care. Gives me shivers to think what dogs go through and cannot tell us they are suffering. I cannot imagine hurting and not being able to tell somebody and get help but that is our dogs' situation. |
An update: After a week of antibiotics took Bear for a follow up visit and thecorneal ulcer was BIGGER:(((. At that point the vet recomended ophtalmologist. Took him to the specialist fist thing the next morning and he was diagnosed with Left Eye estopic cilia or ingrown hair on the upper left eyelid. Bear had his surgery yesterday and is still feels tired from the tranquilizer. We need to confinue antibiotics and pain drops for a week, and then we have a follow up with the specialist. Poor baby got Elizabethan collar to wear 24-7 and he is not happy. |
Poor baby Bear. Sending hugs and get well prayers! |
