Puppy food I am new to yorkietalk and just got a little yorkie Gabby :D I have been reaading about the foods people have posted on here but I do not know if they are good for puppies or have a puppy formula. Gabby is almost 13 weeks old and the food her breader had her on was Purina Puppy Chow which I know is not a very good quality food. Her stool has been loose and I do not know if it has to do with the food or coming to a new home. My vet suggested Science Diet but I have not seen a lot of people on here talk about it! What suggestions do you have for me and Miss Gabby?? Thanks!! Emilee |
I'm no expert but have had yorkies in my life for 26 yrs, and sometimes the new home transition is hard on their little systems. If you are considering changing food , it is wise to do it gradually, especially a new puppy. You would be say 1/4 new to 3/4 old for a few days then slowly increase until converted. I have my girls on Blue Buffalo. Its a holistic food with no added corn, soy and crap. One of my girls had a real bad food allergy and this was one she did well with. They have a small breed puppy. Origen was also recommended to me. Good luck and welcome! |
There's lots of great holistic puppy foods out there such as Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Chicken Soup and Merrick. There's also some foods that are made for all life stages such as Canidae and Taste of the Wild which means they can be fed from puppyhood all the way until they're a senior. There's also some really good grain-free brands such as Orijen and Acana but I know some of those arn't recommended for puppies, just can't remember which ones right now although I do think Orijen makes a puppy formula. Thank you all! I was wondering if it was too early to change her food since I have not had her long but I do want her on a better food! I will probably wait a month or so before I do! |
Had my 10 week old (2.7 lbs) for under a week and just switched him over from Pro Plan (what the rescue group had him on) to Primal (raw food diet). Today is the first whole day of the switch, but already I notice that he is not drinking as much water (because raw food has seven times more moisture in it than kibble) and he hasn't pooped once today (as opposed to the soft stools he was producing up to four times per day; which is good because his body is making better use of this food and not just sending it out the other end). I feed my other dog Blue Buffalo and Orijen, which are two really good kibbles, but I'll be switching him over to raw soon as well. Did the math, and with 30% meaty bones and the rest formula, it will cost approximately $51 per month to feed both (my 10 pound two year old and the puppy at his current weight of 2.7 pounds). Pricey, but with such small dogs, definitely doable. |
