Help! Coughing problems! My little Bisco has had a cough ever since we got him and he was about 11 weeks. He had kennel cough which he has been cured of.He is now four months and he still has the cough. He has been on three different antibiotics since we've had him. The last antibiotic, baytril, really seemed to help but when he finished it, his cough started getting worse again so now he is on another round of it. How long should it take for his cough to go away? I am worried that when he finishes this new dosage, his cough will come right back! I've heard sometimes it can take upwards of nine months. His poor little throat! |
Cali is having the exact same problm. I got her at 9 weeks and she had kennel cough she has been on 3 antibiotics which help temporarily and then the cough gets worse. I know its some type of virus because my 8 year old pom caught it to and she still has it even after I gave her antibiotics. The vet says it's not her trachea but she is now 21 weeks old and still coughing, some days 3 times some days 5-6. She always coughs when she wakes up. Any thoughts would be appreciated by us both. Thanks |
Dollar too...i think that it is normal in Yorkies??? i mean Dollar had Kennel cough...took all his meds for that but he still has his cough?? what is up with that.... |
Sigh... OMG... so does my Maximus! :( Got him at 12 weeks. He's had the cough ever since... and it will be 2 weeks tomorrow. He's been on antibiotics and the cough isn't as bad but still present - especially at night. I'm so worried. |
When we are in training and he starts coughing, I feel like the other dog owners are looking atus like "oh god, he's sick. Why are you here?" But he's not contagious anymore! When will this end? It is comforting to hear that we're not alone. But, oh all those poor coughing babies! |
I think that it will never go away...maybe someone will see this and let us know if it goes away! |
Try a HUMIDIFIER with Vicks Vapo Steam 3 Attachment(s) My little 2.lb boy got sick a few months ago. I was so scared and he seemed very sick. My Vet gave him Clavamox. Then i went and bought a Humidifier and some Vicks vapo steam liquid " I USED MORE THAN RECOMMEND" about a teaspoon a night to fill the room with the vapos to ease his airways. It really helped keep his little nose open and his cough left in days. I still use it just to keep everyone safe from the flu season. Maybe it could help your little one? |
I gave dollar that Clavamox too, didnt help. i will try that vapor thing...thax! |
coughing I had this problem too and spent the money to get a nebulizer. Revival had them for less than $100. My doc gave me an antibiotic to mist thru the nebulizer. I put my pup in a crate, completely covered with towels for 20 minutes per day and nebulized her with the antibotic and in a week she didn't cough any more. |
WOW!!! cool. |
Thanks for all the input! I will definitely try the humidifier and vicks.I hope it works! Let's keep our fingers crossed! |

I was told today by my vet that low blood sugar can cause coughing in these little ones. Could this be the problem with your guys? Just a thought. |
They all sound like they have URI's (upper respiratory infections). Clavamx is what you will be given and sometimes his takes months to go away. You must be consistent with the medication. |

Also, does anyone else have info on the cough and it's relation to neutering?I know he'll get a trach tube inserted during surgery and I know that will irritate his cough further.Should I wait? What if this doesn't go away?I had wanted to spay him as young as possible but we are trying to wait...... |
