Problems with NV Instinct Raw Chicken? Hi everyone, I'm sad to report that we lost our precious Zoe on Saturday monrning. She had developed hypocalcemia and also had low blood albumin. She was only sick for one week. I don't want to go into all the sad details but you can imagine that we are just devastated! Here's my question. I had changed her to the above mentioned food on a gradual basis and she was on it exclusively for three weeks prior to getting ill. Have any of you had or heard of any problems like this when feeding this food? Zoe was seven years old and had not experienced any serious health concerns other than pancreatitis. The vet ruled that out on this occasion with a blood test. Her pancreas was fine and her renal levels were fine. I hope I did not cause her illness with this food switch. But if I did, I feel the need to warn others to be aware of the potential problems. Thanks! Dena |
So sorry for the loss of your Zoe. My prayers are with you. I have switched my yorkie, Hershey, over to this food about 3 weeks ago. So far so good, but I am interested to see if anyone else has had any problems with this food. |
I feed mine NV raw every morning, and about every other bag is the chicken variety. It is what they are getting now, and I've never had a problem. I am so sorry you lost your baby. |
Hypocalcemia and low blood albumin: Hypocalcemia in Dogs It appears something else was going on, and you changing the food was just coincidental. You did not cause this. Again, I am so sorry. |
thank you I want to thank you both for your replies and expressions of sympathy. My husband and I both spent time on the internet yesterday looking for anything at all that might be negative about the Instinct food and came up with only positive reviews, thank goodness! After reading the article on hypoparathyroidism, I recongnize that her symptoms were right in line with that so maybe that was the root cause. We will start the search for our next baby soon. Neither of us is ready to live without a dog right now. I'll post whenever we find our next little bundle of joy! |
The company will block neg. reviews. Salmonella poisoning, also known as salmonellosis, is the most common type of foodborne illness. It can infect dogs, cats, humans and most other types of animals. The likely sources of salmonella in cats and dogs are eggs, meat and dairy products, along with wild birds and their feces. Salmonella is easily transmitted from one species to another via contact with infected feces, saliva or from a common tainted food source. Carriers A dog that is a carrier of salmonella might have no signs, but it can still infect others through its feces, saliva or vomit. Signs Signs of salmonellosis in dogs include vomiting, watery diarrhea, increased thirst, fever and abdominal pain. Time Frame A dog will usually display signs of infection within six to 72 hours of infection. Treatment Treatment includes IV fluid replacement to counter dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea, along with antibiotics in severe cases. If the dog doesn't respond to other treatments, a veterinarian might use salmonella anti-serum to eradicate the bacteria. Recovery can take a few days up to a few weeks; the prognosis is usually favorable for adult animals in good health. Warning Even after treatment and cessation of symptoms, a dog will continue to shed salmonella bacteria in its feces for up to six weeks. Dogs should be kept away from public areas during this time. Protective gear should be used if cleaning up the animal's waste. Salmonella Food Poisoning in Dogs |
I once tried feeding Sasha NV raw chicken. She ate it for a few days and then became uninterested in the food. I tried switching protein sources but even that didn't do the trick so I took her off of this food. A few years later, I kept reading about many members using primal raw and raving about it so I decided to try it. I was hesitant because of how she was with NV but decided to give it a try anyways. She has been eating it for 5 months now and hasn't hesitated once. I'm not sure if there was something wrong with the food I had or if she just in general didn't like the food. She never got sick on it and I never experienced any issues with the food for the short time she ate it. I know other members here use this food with no issues so I'm sure the food wasn't the problem. I'm so sorry for your loss. |
First, I'm so terribly sorry for your loss :( and I'm glad you were able to get confirmation that the food was not the problem so you have peace of mind. Just to add to the post regarding if there is any danger to using Nature's Variety Raw - I fed my dogs and cat NV raw, kibble and canned(including chicken) for 2 years and never had any problem. Many of the things that would make us sick dogs' systems process very differently. (only dogs that have some sort of immune compromising condition can be effected by salmonilla). The vet I worked for for many years who's clinic was certified by AAHA and did constant furthering education in canine and feline nutrition recommented a raw or partial raw diet for every patient and made his own raw diet for his dogs which included NV as well as other raw meats (even venison that he hunted himself). He was so impressed with Natuer's Variety's nutritional content that he started selling it instead of Innova. My experience is that NV is a wonderfull company that does major research and quality controle and feeding raw food to dogs is safe and very healthy and natural for them :) |
I have fed NV medallions as well as a prey model raw diet with no problems. I'm sorry for your loss but I don't think it caused your problems at all. |
I am terribly sorry for your loss. |
