Help....micky sniffs all the time!!! Hi all forum members!!! I am new here and have a problem with our new yorkie. We adopted him about 6 months ago and were told he was about 3 years old. He didnt look too good when we got him and think he may have been neglected.....he only weighed 3.8 lbs. Immediately took him to the vet for checkup and was told by vet everything was ok. Took a while for us to get him potty trained and to compound things he got 2 bladder infections. He was also marking inside quite a bit so we had him fixed. He is really good now and is potty trained and never goes inside!!! The problem that we are having with him now is that he is constantly sniffing his rear end...almost compulsively to the point it looks like he is uncomfortable. This seems to have started after we got him fixed. We have had his anal glands expressed several times by the groomer and it doesnt help. WHATS UP WITH HIM CONSTANTLY SNIFFING HIS REAR END???? Any input would be greatly appreciated!! |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. :) Glad to hear that your little guy is coming along and making great strides with potty habits. I recommend having your vet check out his rear end. Anal glands can get infected or impacted and sometimes rupture. Could also be another problem involving the anus and colon. Does he have difficulty pooping? Be sure to check his anus daily to make sure it is clean. The smaller the dog, the more likely they are to have a little something left over that can cause problems. I have big boys (7 and 8 pounds), but I still check them every day because they are in full coat. I am an advocate of not manually expressing glands unless absolutely necessary. Frequent manual expression can cause more problems than it solves. A dog's stools should be firm and large enough to express the glands naturally. If your dog's stools are a bit on the soft side or too small, then you may want to evaluate diet. |
Thanks for the advice Maximo. Is there any external signs to infected or compacted glands? We have been checking his butt daily to see if there are any signs of swelling. All looks normal on the outside. His but is shaved so there are no "Hangers" lol. We only feed him prescription dog food that can only be bought from the Vet. It does look like he labors to poop most times when he goes and his stool looks to be a little on the soft side. |

Maybe the Rx diet is giving him gas and he is sniffing it. My younger boy turns and sniffs his rear end right before he needs to do "big business." However, you said Mickey is doing it compulsively. I would check in with the vet just to be safe. If you have a good relationship with your vet, you may try calling the office and asking. |
Got a appointment for him tomorrow 0830 am... Will let you know what I find out. |

May be the hair is clipped too short and causing irritation? Good Luck at the vet's... |
Ok. Just got back from vet. He felt the flands from the outside and said that they needed to be expressed from the the inside. After expressing the glands he determined that the may be infected and proceeded to give him a shot in the butt and prescibe antibiotics. We will see how this works. He didnt like the the finger in the butt at all but the shot in the rear end didnt bother him at all!!! |
Haha! Glad to hear... Yorkies can be odd at times... mine has taken to watching herself poop... IDK!:D |
Oh, so glad you got him in for vet care and hoping he is feeling very good very very soon. Tell Micky my Tibbe is very sorry he had to undergo the finger treatment! |
Glad to hear Micky has meds and I hope the problem clears up soon. Poor boy having to have the exam. :( Now you can focus on sharing some pictures with us! :D Best wishes. |
