Itchy ears! Ok, I'm taking Bitsy to a new vet in the morning to have her ears checked on. She has been scratching them on and off, more on than off. First was told she had mites by the groomer, tried some med. to get rid of them, worked great. Then she started again, while I was getting her booster shot I asked the traveling Vet Dr, he checked her and said they were irritated, gave me MalOtic to put in her ears. Well....I've been doing some reading on MalOtic and have stopped using it. Seems it has caused some dogs to go deaf:eek: |
This drug has antibiotic in it. So if there was/is a bacterial infection present, stopping it could cause resistence to it. The ingredients in this drug appear to be the same (with the same side effect) as Otomax (an extremely popular drug for these issues). I think it's the gentamicin. The vet can take a look and maybe give you something else (like Zymox), but may recommend that you continue the current drug. Also, it sounds like the groomer told you that your pup had mites and then told you what to use. This is borderline illegal. It's practicing veterinary medicine w/o a license and is pretty dangerous. Anytime there is ear discharge that needs to be treated, a vet should look with the otoscope to make sure the eardrum is healthy (medicating with an eardrum issue would be a major issue). |
New vet was wonderful:) He never had heard of the med.that the other vet gave me:eek: Told me to just get rid of it. He gave me Tresaderm to use. She has had one dose so far, we'll see how this goes. |
