Stopped eating his salmon??? Well I've concluded that somethings up with Harley... He got car sick two days ago (and he NEVER gets car sick or even pees in the car) He threw up his breakfast (which is canned salmon) and he hasn't touched the salmon since. So this is what I feed him, he gets free fed NOW! adult kibble, and then I take a can of salmon and put it in icecube trays, he gets an icecube in the morning and at night. I heat the cube for 20 seconds so that it thaws. he's been on this fish diet for a while, but i alternate what type of fish i give him. I threw out the food in his dish, and I just gave him some rice and he gobbled it up, I'm going to give him some more cause I figure he's hungry. he is acting fine otherwise.. Do you think something is wrong with the salmon? or maybe I'm giving him too much? he weighs 4lbs. Oh and I called vet and she said just to give him something bland, he's not throwing up and hasn't since the car and he has had a nice normal stool. thanks |
You know how sometimes we can eat too much of something and feel sick, even if it is something as healthy as salmon? Well, maybe he just got a little overwhelmed by all the fish, and his tummy was achy. Things like rice or bread that don't have much taste can help settle a stomach. I hope he is feeling better, but if he continues to not eat his regular food I would consult your veterinarian. :animal36 |
we have an appointment at 4:20... he's thrown up and has diarrhoea poor thing.. I'm thinking I screwed up and was over feeding him He's never had a problem with fish. But I was talking to the people at the local pet store and she said that it sounds like he's eating a bit too much. What sucks about these little guys, is now I"m going to drive to the vet, he's going to get poked and prodded for two seconds, given a shot, and I'll have a tiny bottle of drops to give him orally and that'll cost me $100. That and I've discovered that my insurance plan really sucks. |
Did you take him in the car right after he ate? If so, that could be the problem. I have to feed my girls 2 to 3 hours before a car ride or not feed them until after the drive in order to keep tham from getting car sick. Moo grew out of it but Maddie Jo still gets car sick. Also, hw long has he been eating fish? Maybe it's too much protein for him. One of my puppies had loose stool and vomiting from a high protein food...the vet said to change it to lower protein...I switched foods and it stopped. Good luck...I hope he's o.k. |

He's been eating fish in different forms since he was 4 weeks old. It all started when I was at the breeder's house, I brought her lobsters and he licked my hands after I ate one :P When he got older we let him have it as a treat, the last month or so I started using fish as a supplement to his kibble (NOW!) because the Tripe I was feeding was back ordered. He's had many types of fish. First canned Atlantic Salmon, then fresh haddock which he loved, he's had sardines and now we've tried pacific salmon. I'm thinking the pacific salmon has too much protein in it, so maybe it was my fault because I gave him too much. I'm thinking if I'm going to stick with the salmon I need to reduce the amount. Because the amounts were "so small" I was told by many people that switching it up wouldn't cause problems, but maybe I did. The other possibility is that I just happened to get a bad can. So in a long story I've answered the question, yes he's used to the protein, but I'm starting to think I've over fed him. I'm going to be disappointed if I can't keep feeding him fish, cause man his coat was beautiful and his appetite picked up a lot. He just generally was really healthy on it, or maybe I'll just have to stick with sardines and haddock. |
What is the protein count in the NOW! food? Maybe that added with the salmon put him over the top and upset his system. |
Just got back from vet, he also agrees with the fact that I probably over did the protein. He suggested that I cut the fish in half and that should probably be better. I really wish I could find a nutritionalist who could spell everything out for me, so that I can figure this whole thing out. I really like preparing food for him myself, and want to provide him with the most balanced diet. So yeah he gave Harley a shot and some oral meds to settle his tummy and we should be good after a few days of bland diet. |
