Comfortis do or dont? Hi everyone, I haven't been on YT in a very long time....nice to be back. Unfortunately I am having a simultaneous issue; I have 3 yorkies 7 pounds and under, 2 of the 3 have bouts with pancreatitis on occasion. They have been besieged by fleas and the topical stuffs a waste of money as it isn't working at all. My vet wants to try comfortis....my gut tells me NO. I don't know what to try next. I get my yard/house sprayed, bathe them with a special shampoo coz they have skin issues and dawn irritates them something fierce, have and continue to get all bedding washed. Still the lil buggers persist! So...I realize there is a lot of issues at once so Ill narrow it down; 1. how do I prevent tummy issues all together (they are on Purina one, which has worked for over 2 years) 2. how do I get rid of the pests without harming my fur babies? Any suggestions welcome. |
Dogs who get pancreatitis will usually need a lower fat food than Purina offers. How about Sentinel and Capstar? |
I love Comfortis for all 5 of my doggies. Like you I was losing the flea battle last year, Frontline and Advantix didn't work & made their fur yucky. Comfortis worked quick (like Capstar) and worked so well I didn't have to re-treat for about 3 months. I was cautious about giving it to Tiki, who possibly has liver issues, but she did fine. One thing I like about Comfortis, is that the dose is very weight specific, so you aren't giving a 7# dog the same as a 30+# dog. You can't use it on dogs less than 5# though. It comes in a soft-ish treat type pill, so now I buy the bigger dose (same price) and split it down to appropriate size, since I have 5 dogs to treat. |
HHmmmm, well my lil Duncan is 4.7 pounds. Not sure what to do. But I sincerely thank you for your input. Is there a food that you recommend instead of the purina one. like Blue or something? |
My Toy Fox Terrier had fleas terribly last year no matter how much frontline I put on her. My vet said the fleas have become resistant to the topical kind of flea prevention, and to use Comfortis. That took care of it almost right away. I don't know if Comfortis is okay for such a small dog or one with pancreatitis, though. If you do give it to them make sure to give it with a meal, or else they get sick. |
Sorry I don't have any advice for you with the food issue. I use Comfortis for my 2 yorkies in the summer. They have both been fine taking it, and it works great. I saw my first flea last October, called the vet, went and picked up the Comfortis, gave it to them with dinner, and an hour later I had 4 dead fleas on the floor. Never seen any since. I'm sure the fleas could have been alot worse but I use Sentinel too. |

Well I just moved to Colorado and don't have flea issues anymore but we moved from South Georgia and struggled with fleas for a long time My girl actually is allergic to fleas so it was really painful in the beginning watching her not only scratch from fleas but from the irritation the allergic reaction was causing her as well. My vet put both my dogs on Comfortis, which is a nice alternative to topicals. With the combination of Comfortis and doing my part to get rid of the fleas we never had a problem again. A few things you might try is vaccuuming more often and having yor house AND yard sprayed once a month (alternating between the two) for fleas. I invested in a Roomba (robot vaccuum) that I would run everyday to pick up eggs and larvae that were possibly caught in the carpet. Once a week you should wash their bedding and clothing too. The larvae CAN NOT be killed with anything so you have to vaccuum them up or wash them away before they hatch into adults. Its difficult breaking the flea cycle but once you do and keep them on a preventative its worth the work ;) |

My Experience with Comfortis Hi There.. this is Carrie with Wild West Yorkies... I was told by a vet that I could split a larger dose among my babies... It did not go well! All of them ran fever, and had chills for about 2 1/2 days. I thought I was going to lose them! I will say... I did not have a flea problem for MONTHS.. but it was not worth if for me to ever use it again on them. I now split the dosage of the K9 Advantix and we do just fine. We first use a dose of capstar which kills any existing fleas and eggs.. and then do a dose of the K9 Advantix. (I have the breakdown for K9 Advantix, so I buy the larger tube to save money) This has worked for us. The comfortis is well worth it on my Lab and Giant Schnazuer, but I will NEVER again use it on my babies. That was a VERY scary time. ~ Carrie |
My Westie takes Comfortis with no problems. My vet would not recommend it for Lucy at the time because she was under 5 lbs. We have had success with her in using Sentinel; but Sentinel does not kill ticks and Comfortis has been shown to kill ticks (though it is not labeled for that). He has recommended a tick collar to be put on her during our walks in the woods and then taken immediately off. Not sure what I'll do with that advice. |

I do have a bigger boy at 16lbs so maybe he would do alright with it. Right now he is on Iverhart Plus for heartworms and Frontline for fleas/ticks. Ticks are our main problem here in Maryland though.... so that's my #1 concern is killing those little suckers. I hate putting the stuff on his back, it makes his hair sooo nasty! |
Obviously it takes some research and experimenting to get the right solution for you. Unfortunately, it isn't a "one treatment fits all" situation. I'm just so grateful to finally have dogs free of fleas and ticks, especially since I have 5. I also did a more extreme measure which isn't available to everybody.... I removed all carpet from my home. Have tile downstairs and hardwood upstairs, and I'm sure that has helped. |
We give our doxie comfortis, and I pray that my baby tops out over 5lbs so we can give to her too! lol. It's amazing. He never has fleas, and we live in Fl. |

Yes! we removed all of our carpet too, several years ago! BEST thing ever! Good luck! One would think with the hard winter we had here in Texas.. we would not have to worry about this! ggggggrrrrrr! |
