Resorting to Chef Michael I have five dogs but my main concern is my three little ones. They started out eating Health Extension and loved it. Now they hate it. I've tried every dog food on the market and I am embarrassed to say they have taken a liking to Chef Michael Chicken both dry and canned food. That's the only one they like. I'm not too worried about the older ones Zach 11 months old and Zoe who is 15 months old, but I am kind of worried about Oliver because he's only 4 1/2 months old. I know Chef Michael is not on the top of the YT forum but I had to resort to it. I've even tried home cooking. Oliver used to be such a good eater now he's terrible. I do give them a vitimin supplement. Anybody have any ideas? I only want whats best for them. |
In my personal opinion... You have to feed what works for you. |
I've never heard of "health extension"...but having 2 VERY picky yorkies myself I feel your pain!!! The sad thing about Chef Michaels is it is a low quality food...I view 2 star dog foods like McDonalds...sure it's tasty but is it really good for you full time? My pickiest yorkie really likes Nutri source dog food. Its 4 star...and comes in very small bites. I've never seen her just sit at her bowl and eat until she's full....but she does with that food. We found it at our local Grain and Feed store. If you have one near you ....you could ask them for a free sample....and try it out. Also you might check around your area and see if any of your Pet specialty shops offer FREE samples of foods...Our very small store here in town gives free samples of quite a few different foods... try them out! You might find a food you can get your little ones to eat. Also some people sprinkle parmesan cheese on the dry food....to get their yorkies to eat it. Good luck!:D |
I'm going to keep trying but I doubt if they'll change their stubborn little minds. I do give them a vitimin suppliment that was recommended by my vet. Oh and btw I do sprinkle parmesan cheese on their food. They used to be such good eaters at one time. |
I think you have to feed what works best in your household. Mine get caesars everyday and I know what people on here would think of that but thats what they will eat and works for me. You cant force a dog to like a particular food |
If you were switching foods often and giving them many choices, that may have made them picky. They like Chef Michael's b/c they spray animal fat on the food and it entices dogs. I feel your pain, but I would not stick with this food. Try to better food (Blue Buffalo, Acana, Orijen, Fromm, Wellness. GO! etc) and stick with it. They may strike for a bit, but chances are they will come around and eat. Once they realize that the one you choose is it, that you will not be offering something else b/c they turn their nose up, they probably will eat. We had our finicky Snickers and he did well on Acana. But now he is on a premade raw diet (Primal) and it is just perfect for him and our new puppy Reesie although Reesie is a trash compactor and would eat anything!!!!:) Good luck- Viv |

You cant force a dog to like a particular food[/QUOTE] Not anymore than you can force a child to eat healthy...however it shouldn't stop you from continuing to offer 'premium' foods. Although I have to admit I did go through a period of time...when I was SICK of buying NEW expensive foods for her to put her nose up at!:rolleyes: BUT, I did find one that she will eat! So I'm just encouraging you to not give up...Maybe others have some picky eaters...and they can suggest a food you might be interested in trying. It's also not unusual for a dog to get bored with their food....it's been suggested that we try different flavors in a particular brand...to give them a variety of flavors and nutrients. No single food provides all the nutrition they need. |

People can live their whole lives on Mc donalds...but does that mean they are healthier? Food that contains fillers...cannot be considered better just because they are cheaper and the dog will eat them. True many dogs, and cats have lived VERY long lives on poor quality foods....but why take the chance...esp. with a breed that is prone to health problems. The OP asked for advice...and mine is simply ..Don't give up at least trying to find a good quality food they will eat. |

A HUGE amen to that!!:thumbup::thumbup: |
I dont think there is anything wrong with trying to get them to eat a premium food if thats what you want to feed and I didnt tell the op not to just giving another side. but not everyone does for a variety of reasons and they shouldnt be quoted and admonished for my choice just because its different than yours. Not only is it the only wet food they will eat I also have 8 animals, 6 cats and 2 dogs and its what I can afford. And thats all I was saying sometimes people have their own reasons for feeding a food. All of my pets are happy and healthy and yes they are wellness tested every year so when I say they are healthy I know they are |

Thanks everybody. Yes I am going to keep trying. I just told my room mate to pick up a few cans of Blue Buffalo, and Wellness but I've tried so many already I'm dizzy. And Chachi I have 15 cats that live on Friskies one of them died at 19 years old and another at 18. I realize that the food I'm giving the dogs are not the best and I spoke to the vet about this. He reccomended I give them NU VET PLUS. When I took Oliver for his vaccination he weighed in at 9 lbs. The vet says I must be doing something right I HOPE SO. |
Ellie's vet told me recently that Yorkies are the breed she sees the most for "not eating" "picky eating." Apparently Hills Science Diet T/D was tested on Yorkies because they are the pickiest dogs with the worst teeth. If Chef Michaels is approved for the lifestages of your doggies, then it is okay to feed it. I'm not saying it's optimal, but there is no hurry to get them to eat something else as long as they do well on it. For the puppy you aren't going to have much choice because of the hypoglycemia concern. The older ones can go awhile without food to see if they will take the kind that you want to feed. How long they can go would be your vet's call. With the adults, there is always a small chance of something going wrong when doing this (hypoglycemia, throwing up bile), but most vets would be just fine with just offering the owner's preferred food for a perios of time. |
