Eye Crusties Hi all! I am new to this site, and new to Yorkies! I have a twelve week old little guy named Cooper. I have a couple of questions.... He has these crustie eye boogers. How do I get those off without him hating me? I have tried a warm cloth, but he hates it. Help! Also, are these guys hard to potty train? thanks a bunch, and I hope to make lots of new friends!:aimeeyork |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. :) Congratulations on your new addition to the family. For eye boogers, I use cotton balls wet down with warm water or sterile saline. Then I use a tiny flea comb to remove any remaining softened crusties. Potty training varies from pup to pup. Some are effortless, some are more challenging. Do your part to set your dog up for success by giving Cooper ample opportunity to potty in the correct place. Praise him profusely for each good potty, "Good boy! Way to go! Woohoo!," and give him a small treat (I always use a kibble). Don't scold for accidents. Calmly clean them up with an enzyme cleaner to remove the scent that may attract him to return to the site. Enjoy your boy. |
I use Vaseline to soften the eye goobers. I also noticed a reduction in eye goobers when I switched to a grain free food. |
Thanks a bunch! I will try the cotton ball remedy :) |

Some food do seem to increase the eye crud. I saw a big reduction when I switched to Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit. I use a warm wet cloth too. I sometimes use the eye pads that come in a plastic jar sort of like stridex pads only with special eye-friendly solution. They are sort of expensive and do not seem to work as well as a wet wash cloth so I probably will not buy any more of them. I also use a flea comb to get the last of the crud out of their hair. I don't think any dog likes you to mess around their eyes, but it is just a necessary grooming job. |
Hi and welcome to YT. I either use a piece of a baby wipe or a damp baby facecloth. I then comb them out. They don't really like it but will tolerate. Sometimes I get a little lazy and let it go a day or 2 then it's worse and they really don't like it. |
Welcome to YT! I've read bottled water helps reduce eye crusties. Kaji drinks bottled water and no longer has hard eye crusties, (well... more like rarely gets them) but has eye buggers instead. They're real soft and easy to pick out, and it's not a large amount either. |
