Natural Balance L.I.D. Potato & Duck I am looking for a lower protein food to feed Calvin after he gets his six month liver shunt blood work done. I have been feeding Bella wellness and Calvin is on the prescription food from the vet. The vet said that as long as his blood work comes back ok he can go back to regular food. So here I am looking for a lower protein food. The NB has 21 grams of protein compared to 28 in wellness. Does anyone else fee NB and do you like it? |
I've heard wonderful things about NB  And they have a lot of options for limited ingredient, low protein/fat, so I'm sure you could find something that works. |

I put Rylie on it because 1. I felt more comfortable feeding a lower protein food and 2. my cat Suki has food allergies and I didn't want her having a reaction if she accidentally got into Rylie's food. Suki has been in NB LID since I figured out she had food allergies (no thanks to my old vet... we now have a new awesome vet). She stopped puking up her food almost everyday and stopped ripping her ears apart. She still has some kind of environmental allergy though because she does still scratch her ears. We are currently trying to treat her with a low dose steroid regimen. All in all, I love NB. Both my pets are happy and healthy and it is a good quality food. It is also grain free, lower protein, etc.!:) Oh and btw, NB also makes Limited Ingredient Treats (L.I.T)! Rylie loves those too! I got the potato and bison so that it is different from her kibble. We'll try another flavor once her current treats run out. |
I have both my MVD dogs on NB LID right now- however, I have them on the chicken one. Be careful with duck with a dog with liver issues- duck is usually very fatty and not the best protein for these dogs. But otherwise, I really like NB and like their LID diets because they are grain free without being high protein. The only problem I have with them is that only the duck comes in small bites and the kibble size is pretty large for a yorkie- however, mine seem to do okay with it anyway they just eat a little slower. |
I feed both of mine NB...I just got a sample of the Alpha, they love it, it's the salmon, trout and whitefish;) |
NB is a great food. During Sasha's picky food stage years ago, I had fed her NB Venison and Sweet Potato which she liked for awhile but eventually got sick of it. I may have even fed her the fish and sweet potato to but it was so long ago that I don't remember. Still, I think it's a very good food and seems to be extremely popular for dogs that have allergies. |
I feed both my dogs NB LID. They are currenting eating the chicken. I had purchased the potato and duck but Speedy wouldn't eat it. Toby eats whatever I put in front of him. Since it is a bit pricey, I took the bag of potato and duck back to Petco and they let me exchange it (I had the receipt) with no questions asked. My two have been on NB for several months. I swap out for a different flavor every couple of months and have no issues. They both like the chicken or the bison. |
Wellness and Blue Buffalo also have Limited Ingredient Diet foods now. Competition :) Wellness Simple Food Solutions® Rice & Duck Formula is 20% protein also have Wellness Dog Simple® Recipes and Blue Buffalo Basics Turkey has 22% protein. also have Blue Buffalo - Natural Dry Dog Food |
Thank you everyone! Looks like I have some more research to do...lol... |
Which formulas of NB are grain-free? I don't see any grain-free ones, but I'm probably missing something, lol. I'd be interested in trying this food with a higher protein canned food added to it. And has NB ever had any recalls? I know they are manufactured by Diamond (I believe....) but didn't know if they personally had been involved in recalls. |
Nevermind, I see all the grain-free formulas on this page. :) Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods: Dry Dog Food And it looks like they have a new formula that's a bit higher protein :) http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/alpha_dog.html I'd be curious to try this one out. It's 26%. |
Brit- Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Allergy Formulas for Dogs Says they have Grain Free allergy formulas and Alpha Line Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance ALPHA Dog Formulas Heavy on the potatoes. |
So im going to scratch the duck and potato because im worried about the duck being too fatty and go with one of the other ones...i think i saw that the bison & sweet potato and the venison & sweet potato has 20% protein...they have a variety so I hope I can find something they like :) |

Right now I've got Jackson on Go! Endurance and he's always done pretty great with this kibble. I leave the Orijen Regional Red kibble sitting out for him all day if he wants to munch on it but when I was feeding solely Orijen RR formula this last time Jackson was getting the runs - not like extremely bad but his poop was soft and occasionally runny at the end of it (gross, I know). I think they changed their formula because he did GREAT on that formula before and now he's suddenly not (well, his poop anyways, everything else was fine). So I'm just looking around for more foods (as usual, lol). We've still got over the half the bag of Go! left so I have time to find another to rotate with :) I do really like Petrucruan Pet Foods (Now!/Go!) so maybe I'll look into the Now! formulas, although those seem pretty potato heavy too. |
The sweet potatoes arent as bad as white, right? |
