Should puppy always have water available? Should water be left out for puppy all the time? Or taken up with food? If not to be left out all the time, how often? |
It should be available all day. Most will do just fine without it at night. |
I have a puppy who is a HOUNDER meaning he HOUNDS anything and everything. If I let him eat & drink all day he would. So he gets 3 meals a day and also is offered water through a water bottle while we are at work in his pen (that way he can't gulp it all down at once) and then from a bowl in 1/4-1/3 cup amounts every 2 hours. We don't give him water past 7pm either. He is 18 weeks old though, we left the water down 24/7 until he was 14 weeks old just in case. He is doing very well on his schedule. Viv |
Joey's breeder recommended that food and water be left out 24/7 untill the puppy was around 6 months. Contrary to what most people think, withholding water at night will not help with housebreaking, a little water can help the bladder stretch gradually, which helps with housebreaking. Urine production slows down at night, so they can hold it longer than in the daytime. |
I think they should have it there during the day. Minnie does not get any when she goes to bed with us. |
I have always left fresh water down 27/7. I home cook, and when they were from 14 weeks to 4 months, I fed them three times a day, with fresh fruit in between meals. After 4 months I feed them (even now) twice a day with fresh fruits, yogurt and such for a mid-day snack. |
I to have also always left water down for Sasha since the time I brought her home up until now. |
I used to take water away before bed but someone here advised me to leave it out all the time and I've been doing it ever since. I'm pee pad training her and I'll notice her take a couple gulps when she wakes up in the night to potty. She's only 4 months so it's good that she can drink whenever she's thirsty |
I leave water out 24/7 changing it frequent for fresh water |
I leave water/food 24/7 for mine, i think for the ones that gulp it down once they know that it is always gonna be there they won't do this anymore, maybe they had to fight for enough food or water from wherever they came from |
We have kibble and water available for our girls 24/7. |

I have water available all day to Jackson but at night, he is baby gated in my bedroom with me so he has no access to water throughout the night. If he did, he'd probably go drink a bunch and then have to go in the middle of the night. Even as a pup, I'd take it away from him at night. |
I leave water out 24/7 and even if she drinks before bedtime we still don't have any accidents over night. I see it as would you like someone telling you when you could drink water? |
