Should I be concerned about frequent urination? I've only had Honey for about a month and a half....she's 10 yrs. old and I've noticed that she needs to be taken out more and more often...probably hourly now. I don't recall her needing to go as much when we first brought her home. So I've researched it a bit....and came up with a few possibilities...most NOT good.... canine diabetes bladder or kidney stones urinary tract infection hormonal imbalance psychogenic polydypsia Cushings or just old age... I'm a little concerned about Cushings disease...and diabetes....so I'll be making an appt. with my vet to get her tested for it.. She has a few of the symptoms in both.:( However until the visit and all the testing is completed.. I am curious if others have a senior yorkie that urinates often and it's just old age. |
Old age isn't a disease, so it shouldn't be accompanied by hourly urination. Some do become incontient, but that would likely be less urine and they don't know they are about to pee. Because there is a possibility that it is a UTI, it shouldn't wait. She should be seen tomorrow. |
I didn't say 'old age' is a disease....but it is mentioned as a possible reason for needing to urinate more often. She's not incontinent...She just needs to pee more often than my much younger yorkies. And that's my plan...her seeing our Vet in the morning! |
My lillymae is 12 & she does this & will fake pee just because she wants to go out & eat bugs in the lawn, lol. But you deff need to rule out any medical reason for her frequency. I would not worry too much as she could simply have a UTI. I will be praying that it is something as simple as that. You mentioned other symptoms, what are they ? |
Wabbit, let me say that the first thing that came to mind is diabetes. I had` a Cairn Terrier who was diabetic the last year and a half of her life. She passed at the ripe age of 16 years. The frequent urination was what alerted us to diabetes. I was terrified for her. She was my heart. What I wanted to tell you is that it is NOT a death sentence. I had to give her daily insulin shots and was sure I could not do it. I have always hated needles and could not even look when my children got a shot. But you know something? I LEARNED to give her the injections. If she ever yelped, I sat down and cried my eyes out because I hurt her. But then I dried my eyes and tried the injection again. She lived a long and happy life. Try not to worry and know that no matter what it is, it will work itself out and she will have a happy life. |

I would NEVER PTS over something that is manageable!!! I've done my homework on diabetes..as well as Cushings...and several of the other serious possibilities.. So I'm prepared! Well I've noticed besides the frequent urination...that she drinks quite often...she has a bit of a round belly.....and I've found a couple little tiny nodules or hard lumps on her head....which I believe are calcium deposits....Will let my Vet tell me for sure...she's also reluctant to jump on even the smallest of stairs...and she does pant at times when its not particularly hot...all of those can be symptoms of Cushings. :( But there are 20 symptoms and she has 6 of them...so we'll just have to see. She's definitely not faking her pee...she does go each time. So I'm hoping that it's just a UTI... |

So it looks like you've done some research, good for you. I hope it's none of the things you listed, but I'm sure if it is that you will manage whatever it is. I will still be praying for something simple for both your sakes. |
So we went to the Vet today....and thank goodness he ruled out really serious issues.....he thinks it's a UTI...he did test the urine I brought in...and he said nothing serious pops out at him....he's not worried about kidney failure...cuz her urine was so concentrated...I didn't even add THAT to my list of possibilities...:eek:.... anyhow..so we're going to do one more test tomorrow morning, a urine culture,..cuz her bladder was EMPTY and he couldn't get anything today:rolleyes: Then he'll take X-rays to rule out stones....other than that... She's doing good.....we are also going to run a blood panel on her just to make sure everything else looks ok...:) Thanks to those that responded. |
Well, so far it's sounding like good news. I will continue to pray for more good news after test results. |

Thanks!:) ME TOO! He did mention that IF she does have a stone...although he couldn't feel ANYTHING in her bladder...(doesn't mean there isn't any in there)....then she would need to have surgery...:( So keeping my fingers crossed... |
