Ideas PLEASE? Allergies? All types poultry? Is it possible for a dog to be allergic to all poultry like duck, turkey & chicken? No matter what I have fed Max he always chews his feet. I have fed him Acana Grasslands which has no chicken but has Duck in it. I have fed him Now! Small Breed which has Turkey and Duck in it. And then I have fed him all the ones that have Chicken as one of the first few ingredients. He can't be allergic to a grain because both Now! and Acana are Grain Free. I have not tried a specific LID yet though. Which brand is best? Which type of food should I try? A Salmon and potato or rice LID food maybe? So confused. :confused: I just want him to not eat his paws. He has been doing this for over 2 years. Not to the point of raw... just wet feet. |
Have you tried any NON poultry foods? Many like Blue Buffalo and Taste of the wild...there's quite a few others...I also feed my girls Natural balance..just started this week...they have Bison, beef, even fish....anyhow I'd definitely get a premium food that doesn't have poultry and see how he reacts! I definitely think it's possible to be allergic to poultry. poor little guy! |
Do you mean the limited ingredient types like BB Basics, NB LID, Wellness Simple Solutions and such? Which should I try first? The regular lines have "poultry" (bird) of some kind in them. Which NB LID did you try? Do they like it? I noticed Acana Pacifica and Acana Ranchlands. Anyone use these? Also, there is a BB Salmon Basics food. |
Acana is 5 star premium food..Best you can get.....definitely give it a try.. some shops offer free samples of their premium foods...you might see if you can get some...see if your little one likes them... I'd try the limited ingredient types..maybe he'll do better on one of those brands! Here's a link that rates dog food...just check out any you're interested in..see how they rate. Jada has horrible allergies to anything with grain, chicken or fish. We switched to Natural Balance LID Sweet potato and Venison and both of my guys love it and no itching. |
I would also try a limited ingredient food. I went through this with my Lily and it turned out that she just cannot eat ANY kibble. Like, even 1 bite of kibble at someone else's house and she's itchy all over. The brand/ingredients don't seem to matter. |

Food allergies are kinda rare (about 10-15% of all allergies). Have you already ruled out enviro (dust, dander, anything) or seasonal? One thing to consider is to ask your vet about giving a steroid shot, and then assess what kind of relief, if any, happens afterward. If there is a lot of relief for a time, that can be a clue that it's more enviro/season related than food related. It is is enviro, then your options are OTC antihistamines, Atopica, Temaril-P, steroids, or allergy testing (if you want to do allergy shots). Poor kiddo! Marcel is terribly allergic to Palo Verde trees (we had him allergy tested) and paw-chewing used to be a big need of his. He is on Atopica, but hopefully over the next year we'll be able to discontinue this as the allergy shots ramp up their effectiveness. I know how frustrating the paw licking is - it looks so miserable :(! |
What did your vet think was the cause of the paw biting? Did he/she seem to point to food allergies? I'd consider a veterinary dermatologist to assess and treat the problem. Good luck. |
How do you know it is food related? When switching foods, how long do you wait before switching again (should be at least 12 weeks)? Has a true elimination diet been done? Are you sure that there is a turkey allergy since the turkey food had duck in it also? Have you tried steroids? Have all protein and grain treats been stopped for now including chews? Hydrolyzed diet from the vet do any good (works well for some dogs)? What proteins has pup eaten (these are now not novel and can't be used in an elimination diet)? |
Thanks everyone for ALL of your wonderful advice and suggestions. :) I usually finish an entire 5 lb-ish bag before moving on. I will take it all into account when trying to make a decision as to what to try. Something my DH brought up was maybe he just has dry skin. In that case maybe a fish oil supplement or fish based food might help. What do you think (summer air conditioner & fall heater = dry skin) ? Goint to pick up some Acana Pacifica today. Trial 1lb bag and see how that goes. |
Millie is allergic to chicken, and we have had so many problems finding the "right" food. She was on Natural Balance small bites in duck and potatoe, and while it wasn't as bad as feeding her chicken, she still definitely had a reaction to it. She is now on her 2nd bag of Solid Gold bison flavored food and she LOVES it. All symptoms have gone away, except I am a little weary on the high protein content in Solid Gold. May want to switch her again one day, but for right now she loves the food and it's not making her itch like crazy. |
Also, forgot to add that Millie has been on a fish oil supplement since she was a puppy- SAVED her dry skin...works like a charm. We just cut open a capsule and pour half of it on her dry food every day |
Have you had allergy tests done? Megan used to lick her feet and her tush and her ears smelled funky and she wouldn't let you touch them. I had her on several different premium foods and nothing changed. WE finally had allergy tests done and found out she is allergic to fish, milk and rice. I went back over the foods I've fed her since she was a puppy and they have all contained those ingredients. I now home cook and use Pinnacle duck and potato for their kibble and she is like a brand new dog! She isn't licking anything anymore and I can rub her ears for as long as I want now :) I would highly recommend having allergy tests done just to see which direction you should go. |
Thanks! He doesn't get ear infections (and they do not smell). He doesn't lick to make bald spots (or anything like that). Just makes his paws wet. Also he has been rubbing his body on the couch and floor lately. Maybe it is dryness. It doesn't seem to bother him as much as it does me-LOL I will try adding fish oil or food like Pacifica and see if it helps. And I'll omit chicken from his diet since a grain allergy does not seem to be it. If this does not help, I'll get allergy tests done. |
