Please Help!!! Hubby fed Izzy and her little yorkie bubby Raisins... How toxic are they and should I make them throw up? They ate about 3 jumbo raisins each!! |
I'm not sure how toxic they are but I'd call your ER vet and take her in to be sure. |
All the sites I looked at said to contact your vet or ER vet immediately. Has it been less than 2 hours since they were eaten? |
Yes it has... she is acting the same... I think she is ok. BUT i am going to keep an eye on her for the night... and see how she is in the morning... Thanks :) |
I would contact the poison hotline and ER vet: Symptoms appear 6-24 hours after the dog eats raisins or grapes (average is 12 hours). Initially, symptoms are gastro-intestinal signs, followed by kidney problems. |

In other words, the raisens can cause acute renal failure (kidneys shut down) if not treated... snopes.com: Raisins and Grapes Harmful to Dogs I wouldn't wait on this one... this is an emergency and treatment should begin asap! Please hurry and get to the vet... http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison...-poisoned.aspx |
Most dogs will be fine. Some will go into renal failure. Lowest toxic amount is not known. It is an emergency. Inducing vomiting would have worked, but it's to late for that. The ER vet would be able to tell you if they can find some kind of least amount to be concerned about number in their toxicology book. |
Raisins are toxic. Have hubby read the list of foods you're NEVER to feed dogs and puppies. Raisins are on that list. For sure call the emergency vet and ask them. If your hubby said he only gave them 2...multiply it by 2. You never know if it's going to affect them until it's too late. |
Rebecca, I am just seeing this now. (Thanks, Kathy) It's the middle of the night, or I'd be calling you. Please, if you wake up and read this post, call the National Animal Poison Control Center. 888-426-4435. And take Izzy to the nearest emergency Vet. Make sure Izzy's buddy also goes to the Vet. 3 large jumbo raisins are highly toxic, esp. for tiny dogs. "The toxic dose of grape products can be as low as 0.1 mg/kg (or 0.046mg/lb), which means less than one grape or raisin may be poisonous to a 10 pound dog. Older or sick animals are the most susceptible. Symptoms usually start with vomiting, diarrhea and/or depression. In the animal hospital, several blood tests values will be affected, especially kidney function tests. Without intensive supportive therapy, death from kidney failure usually occurs within one to four days." The above was taken from the National Animal Poison Control web-site. I am praying you have already taken her to the Vet, or you will get up in the night and read this post. I'll be calling you in a few hours. Sheila |
I did speak to the vet last night because i Just didn't feel right about...She is local so she know just what trail mix i'm talkin about because it's in the local grocery here and has also tried it..lol.. She told me that Izzy and jasper should be fine. She was going to call me around 8 this morning to make sure izzy was still doing ok. Thanks everyone being so concerned.. It mean alot that everyone cares for there two little angels ;) |
Rebecca, Relieved to hear from you. Now, remember, you need to keep a close eye on Izzy and her buddy for the next 1-4 days. Hubby dead, or just wishin' he was? ;) Sheila |
Oh trust me... he feels pretty bad |
A close eye is what they need. Maybe you could print out the sticky on toxic foods for dogs and post to your refrgierator. I do not allow anyone in my house to give anything to my little ones without asking me first. Sometimes people think they know ALL about dogs...not my dogs. |
Thought I would give an update:thumbup: I spoke with the vet this morning and I did to take in JUST to make sure. She is doing perfect... jasper is acting really good to... So after talking with my hubby again he said he bit off a piece from 3 raisins... So they most likey got a total of about 1 raisin... There is now an approved list of treats that Izzy can have :animal36 Thanks everyone :) |
My hubby and his father think they KNOW everything about dogs. Mind you I have spent WAAAAAAAAAy more hours researching yorkies especially and learning. YT has been a good friend of mine lately. LOL My father in law says that it is FINE to feed grapes to a dog, and chocolate too!!!!! My hubby agrees and says oh it can't be that bad, I remember feeding my dog grapes and chocolate! I told them both either one of you feed my dogs grapes or chocolate and you will wish you had never even heard of grapes or chocolate. Ugh! |
