Braunschweiger Hello, I brought my baby home yesterday and forgot to ask the breeder how to prepare the braunschweiger. I got it for her today. Do I cook it like i would with sausage or something? Or give it to her staight out of the container. Sorry, It may sound really stupid but I have never even heard of the stuff until yesterday. Thank you in advance. |
I've never heard of it either. You should probably call the breeder and ask. Teresa |
Doesn't some come precooked? Either way, it is pork liver sausage. Sausage should never be given to dogs, especially breeds who are prone to pancreatitis. It's also salty. |
Is this a treat or primary diet? "Braunschweiger is a type of liverwurst (pork liver sausage) which, if stuffed in natural casings, is nearly always smoked." Sounds like a lot of fat and a recipe for pancreatitis. Normally I would continue the diet recommended by the breeder, but this would scare me. |
She said for the 1st 3 weeks since she is only 9 weeks old. Also she told me to cook some chicken breast and give it to her? Is this something I shouldn't do as well? this dog does not like dry dog food at all. However the breeder has her hooked on those pupperoni treats. So what is in that, that would make her love them? I wanna get something that she will eat. She don't like Eukanuba dry dog food ( take that back she will eat a hand full and thats it only if its soaked in water) Breeder also gave me some Purina puppy chow and she isn't a fan of that. Any advice to try for wet food. I also got pedigree little champions chicken and beef pouches. I have tried the chicken ones last night she didn't care for that except for the gravy on them. I will try anything. Thanks for the input and advice! :) I GREATLY appreciate it as this is my very first yorkie! |
I would stay away from Pupperoni too. Not good stuff for any dog, but especially not a Yorkie. Very high in fat and fillers. Softening kibble in water is fine. Boiled, plain chicken breast is fine, but it does not alone suffice for a balanced diet. |
How much does your pup weigh? Ditch the sausage and Pupperoni. You can feed softened Eukanuba, and if necessary add a little boiled, plain chicken breast. Watch your pup closely and make sure she eats at regular intervals. Monitor your pup's gums to make sure they stay pink and wet. Pale and sticky gums are a sign of hypoglycemia. Lethargy is another sign. Keep white Karo syrup or NutriCal on hand in case of hypoglycemia. Use only when needed. After your vet has done a wellness check, and if your pup is settling into her new home well, you can introduce new kibbles. There are many good choices at PetSmart, PetCo, your local feed store, or pet boutiques. There is a "sticky" post at the top of this section with recommendations. |
I don't think that braunschweiger would be a good thing to give dogs or puppies. It has alot of fat, salt and maybe spices that aren't good for them. Try to find a good dog food and get the puppy used to it. Good Luck! |
