Allergy to Tide detergent Does anyone else's dog have an allergy to Tide detergent? I just switched to Tide with Downey and noticed that my dog has been licking her front paws constantly. So, I just bought the Tide Free And Gentle yesterday and am going to re-wash all of her blankets, etc. Last night she had a partial seizure and I'm wondering if the skin allergy might have been a cause. I also read online that a lot of dogs have an allergy to Tide specifically. Anyone use the Free & Gentle formula? Any detergent recommendations for dogs with allergies? Thanks! |
When Max was a pup, Tide seemed to be too strong for him. I switched to Woolite. Has your pup had seizures before? I would check in with your vet for other causes. |

She started having petite mal seizures last January. I've been documenting them for the vet, but since she has a liver problem the vet doesn't want to put her on seizure meds just yet. It normally happens about once or twice a month, except she didn't have one in January or Feb up until last night. I had stopped her Frontline Plus in January and didn't reapply until Feb. 11. I'm thinking the seizures are from the flea/tick medicine (even tho I only put about 1/3 of the dosage amount on her)...and we have switched brands multiple times. The vet doesn't see a direct correlation on that yet. I've only been using the tide for about 2 weeks, and she's been licking her paws constant. I definitely think she has an allergy to it. I'm just wondering now if the Tide Free & Gentle will do the same to her since it's still the Tide brand. |
Sorry to hear that your pup is battling seizure and liver problems. You could try the Tide Free and Gentle, but if it is still too strong, use Woolite. It cleans well, but is very gentle. |

Do you wash all of your clothes with the Woolite as well, or just your pups bedding/toys? Mine is constantly in my lap, so I'm guessing I should wash everything in a gentler detergent. Thanks for the suggestion! |
i think i will try that Tide free and gentle. My chihuahua has allergies and i never did try to switch the laundry detergent. its defintiley worth a try and if that doesnt work then the woolite |
I use the Baby Detergent to wash blankies and bed's here. My Sister-In-Law had problems with the Tide with her Beagle and then she switched to All and then didn't have any more problems. |

I tried a couple of baby detergents, but they irritated Max too. Woolite was the only thing that worked for me. |
Yes, Daisy is allergic to everything. We use Tide free and clear and have no problems. I use Method brand rice and milk scented dryer sheets for things with cling (fleece, sweaters, etc) otherwise I use only the blue dryer balls that you find at Bed Bath & Beyond. Daisy used to scratch herself raw with baby detergents, etc. |
Many many years ago when I was in High school my Mom switched to Tide and my sister and I had allergies to it. So I have never used Tide since. I would try another brand altogether just to be safe. |
Tide is a strong detergent so it could be causing allergies. I can't use Ivory soap. It causes terrible itching. My Dad couldn't use Ivory either. |

Thanks everyone! I rewashed all of her blankets last night with the Tide Free & Gentle that I had already bought, and she seemed to already be doing better. I think I will switch to something even more gentle like the Woolite next time around. |
Im glad shes doing better. Tide is the only thing I can use (besides woolite) to wash because other detergents break my Husbands skin out so I feel your pain |
