3 free feeders, and one that is not! getting to be frustrating!!! Ok, here is my dilemma. We have 4 sets of paws. (1) 9 year old cocker, (1) 13 year old toy poodle, and (2) 3 year old yorkies. The poodle and yorkies free feed. The cocker does not. This hasn't been a big problem in the past but lately, the cocker wants to eat everything!!! she is getting FAT LOL. It's driving me nuts because I put the food down and give her a chewy to distract her for a while so the other babies can have a chance at some nibble time. well, they aren't interested in eating right away and don't seem to understand the urgency of it  So...Daisy comes back in the room and devours all of the food. The only solution I have been able to come up with (because training these other 3 dogs to eat on a schedule is just out of the question) is to put a gate in the doggie room upstairs and put their food in there where daisy can't get to it. The problem with that is that they will all have to be closed off in the room for a while at various times of the day in order to get to the food and have a chance to eat, meanwhile keeping daisy out of it. maybe I should clarify that the cocker used to free feed. But for some reason over the last several months, she has slowly become a piggy and wants to eat all of her food in one sitting. I have no idea why this seems so difficult...there HAS to be a better solution!!! Any ideas??? Daisy is eating me out of house and home!!! |
Sorry, but the only solution I can see is getting them all on a schedule. They will learn to eat when it is served soon enough. At their age, they should only need to eat in the morning and in the evening. I have an 8 mo old Yorkie and she has learned to eat in the am and pm. I don't take it away, but she only gets 1/2 her food in the am so it's cleaned out within an hour. Good Luck! Hope you can work it out. |
I don't have a solution or advice, but wanted to say that I'm starting to have a similar problem. I feed my 4 girls the same amount once in the morning and once in the evening, and they don't eat it all at once, but nibble thru the day. Meika is getting chubby, yet Tiki (picky eater) is TOO skinny, and Karlee and Kayla seem about average. I have to monitor their intake better, and will be watching this thread to see what suggestions you get. |
Honestly, the only thing you can do is get 'em on a schedule. I can't really think of any other solutions. I know with Jackson, I leave kibble out all day for him to snack on if he needs/wants to but he gets his breakfast and dinner on a schedule (kibble mixed with wet) otherwise he wouldn't eat enough, but he's an only dog. If I had multiples, I'd like to know who is eating what and how much, lol. |
