how much is too much? Walt got neutered on Thursday. The vet kept him until Friday afternoon. Since then he has been SO HUNGRY! I know they didn't feed him Thursday since they do the surgery on an empty stomach, but I thought he'd be on his normal eating schedule by now. We feed him 2/3rds in the morning and at night and he usually doesn't eat it all... Now whenever I pour his bowl he eats it all right away and gets so excited like he's being starved. He's also been scratching his bowl because he wants more. He's a little under weight so I've been giving him more but I don't want to give him too much... Is he eating too much? Is this a side affect of being neutered? |
I wouldnt worry about it at this time. I think hes just hungry from all the fasting |
His body has undergone an invasive procedure, and now it is trying to heal itself. He is going to need more than his normal amount that you are giving him, especially in consideration that this "normal" amount is not even keeping him at a "standard" weight. I would consider increasing the amount that you give him now, and later after he has healed. I personally feed mine raw. However, I free feed kibble. They always have dry down at all times to eat. Some feel that this leads to obesity, when in truth, it creates exactly the opposite effect. What are you feeding Walt? Sometimes,(I am not saying that this is the case here, but) when the food is not nutrient dense, the pup will continue to desire or demand food, as it is not receiving adequate nutrition for its bodies normal maintenance. Hope this helps.. |
The poor little guy is probably just catching up afer having his surgery. Give him some a little exta until he heals. |

When we got him he was on Eukanuba... He never wanted to eat it and it made his tummy upset. (he always had diarrhea or would literally poop blood) So we went to the vet and the vet said it was too rich and to try another food. So the next one we tried was Gold something... I don't remember the name of it because it was a while ago... It was supposed to be a really good food and it was expensive so I thought he'd do well on it but he was sick with it too and would go a day without eating... SO we went to the vet again and the vet put him on prescription food I.D. I think was it... It was very bland... He did well on it but he ate the bare minimal. Then we went to my parents and he LOVED the food they feed their lab, Purina One... (I know, Purina/Pro Plan gets heat on this site...) But he loved it and it didn't upset his tummy so that's what we got him... He's been on that for about 2 months and has always eaten okay on it but now he's like FEED ME!!! So I've been giving him as much as he wants but he's eating so much more!!! Which since he's small isn't a bad thing, I didn't know if it was a side affect for male dogs because I know it is for female dogs... I guess I'll keep giving it to him if he's doing okay and not obese...? |

I am a firm believer in "human grades" in pet food, and probably have been one of the ones who have given Pro Plan what for! However, when you actually find something that your dog will eat... you should stick with it. I say feed him as much as he wants until you start noticing any unhealthy change. We try to do whats best for our pups, but in the end...its all about just getting them to eat! :D |
