Second thoughts on neutering my dog Hi everyone. My dog is scheduled to be neutered tomorrow morning. I adopted him from a person who couldn't care for him and he is 3 years old. He needs a dental cleaning because he has minor gingivitis, so the vet suggested neutering him at the same time. I know this is a common procedure, but I always walk him on a leash and he never goes outside by himself. He isn't aggressive, only marks outside, and it a great dog. I feel bad about putting him through this procedure because I don't think it's necessary in his situation. Did you have your dog neutered? |
You may have seen the other thread in this section about the debate over health risks and benefits of neutering. I was contractually obligated to neuter, but I would have done it anyway. It is a personal decision. I still lean toward the health benefits and I know my boys would have been the type to be driven to seek a female in heat. Even neutered, they seem to go crazy for the scent of female dogs. |
Yes, both of my dogs are neutered. Aside from health benefits, it is part of being a responsible pet owner. Part of the reason there are so many pets in shelters is people don't spay and neuter their pets. My dogs had no issues and they behaved better after they got neutered. |
What you are feeling is normal. I got nervous the days before taking my girls to be spayed. I was sure they would never be away from me or near a male. I was just sure something would go wrong or they would never forgive me. However, I knew that the health benefits were important to consider and it was the right choice for us. In the end, everything was fine and they did amazing. :) We have a male Am Staff and will be getting neutered ASAP. Good luck and try to relax, he will do great. |
Both my boys are neutered. Barney was neutered very early at about 12 weeks old. He's almost 11 years now and no health problems as a result. Teddy was neutered at 7 months. Good luck with your decision! |
I have read the studies that said that prostate cancer is 4 times more likely in fixed dogs and all of these other health issues so I became worried. I am a *bit* more at ease because from my understanding it's better to neuter an adult dog.. I guess I thought I could keep him away from female dogs that aren't spayed. I am extremely nervous about losing him to an infection or him being sad/lifeless after this. I hope he is still the same dog because I love him! |

I felt the same way when getting my Bridgette spayed. Its hard to think of your baby going under the knife. But I KNEW it was neccessary if I dont want any puppies. I dont have to worry about her getting pregnant I dont have to avoid other dogs because she is "in heat" and dogs at the dog park leave her alone. Its really up to you. I have neutered and unneutered boys. I just believe if you are not going to breed your dog than why not. It takes away all the what ifs. My teddy is NOT neutered and dogs will try to pick fights with him and although he doesnt mark in my home he does EVERYWHERE outside. Where as my Papillon mix Bandit IS neutered and he'll mark in the house if anything of new smell comes in and he isnt wearing his wrap. BUT he doesnt attrack other dogs wanting to start problems either. I'd say if you have no intentions of breeding him do it. Get it all over with at once. I had my Bridgette get a full blood pannel before her surgery to be certain and they kept her overnight to watch her because she was 6 when she was spayed. Its really up to you. But my vote is neuter!! |

We have 5 dogs and 4 of them have been spayed and neutered. Oliver is still too young he's only 3 1/2 months old. I'll probably feel the same as you when it's Oliver's turn, but I know it's best for him. Nobody likes to think of their dogs going through surgery but it's better for the dog and you. |
Yes...I ended up going through with it! He is at the vet right now. They called to let me know that everything went great and if all continues to go well I should be able to pick him up around 6pm. I can't wait to see him and I hope he recovers well and hopefully will be back to his loveable self. Thanks for understanding. He's like my child! |

=(.. he is home now. It\'s hard to see him, he looks like he is in pain. He was licking at the incision immediately so I put the ecollar on him which he hates. He was starving and ate his food quickly. He also jumped on the sofa which scared me! I set up a bed on the floor because I don\'t want him jumping around so ill stay next to him. I feel badly about it but I hope everything gets better soon. I guess I feel guilty=(...but I hope my feelings change once he feels better. |
