HELP!!! Ivan Has Acid Reflux!!! We just took Ivan to the vet and found out even tho is healthy and happy the reason why he has been throwing up this clear slimy fluid is because he has acid reflux. the vet told us to switch his dog food to something for a sensitive stomach. Dose anyone else here have this problem and if so what did you do to change his diet and prevent this from happening again? |
I am not sure what brand your feeding him now. when my binky got older and got sick I thought it might be her dogfood and when I read what was in it...I cried thinking omg ewww I switched her over the dick van pattens natural balance which have formulas are made especially for puppies and dogs with sensitivities to common pet food ingredients I'll post a link for you and hope it helps a bit my new yorkie savannah seems to prefer the chicken. You might ask your vet if you can give him part of an antacid tablet. Some vets do recommend them to help get the tummy settled. I know mine has recommended them in the past. Just ask about it. Don't give it without talking to him. |
Thank You So Much for the link I will most definitely check it out. Quick question did u ever have Binky on any kind of meds for acid reflux? |
We did ask about an over the counter med to give him & she said that it wouldn't work that their stomachs are different & that they or he won't digest it well. What have you given your lil one in the past? & Ivan doesn't have it all the time but we have notice it(the clear fluid) twice this month. |
Rio and Bullet have vomited bile (yellowish, slimy) when their tummies are empty. I free-feed to make sure they can eat any time they want, and they also get a teaspoon of plain organic yogurt first thing in the morning and before they go to bed. |

I used to have that problem with my boy. The vet put him on meds for acid-reflux. I can't remember were I read about someone having the same problem with her Yorkie and giving her baby Coco-therapy virgin oil. It solved her problem and it did mine too. Nicky stopped throwing up :D (until he got sick with something else :(). |
I didn't have binky on meds but the change in food sure helped her in her old age. You should ask your vet about the pepcid for sure and the yogurt sounds like that might help as well if changing his diet doesn't seem to work 100 percent. I for sure would take the more natural approach first since even me at 48 on monday. I had stomach issues for over 18 months they couldn't figure out what the heck was wrong with me totally. My next set of checking was scopes etc. I had a friend recommend green tea and since I had to give up the milk in my tea at night....I gave it a go I've been fine since July when I changed to drinking that tea from about noon when I cut off my coffee and all that weight that packed on is gone too. I even put sugar in it but prefer a raw sugar for the extra flavor. prayers for your little guy though its scary for us when they don't feel well. |
My Charlie takes 1/2 of a pepcid AC a couple times a week to help keep his stomach in order we crush it up and mix in a syringe with water and give it to him orally. (he likes cherry flavor) but it does help him allot, BUT you should do what your vet thinks Mary and Charlie |
I use to have the same problem myself & all I had to do was change my diet & the way I ate & Thank God that it worked I haven't had a problem with it in yrs. I don't know if it's jus me but when I first notice the signs with Ivan I thought that could have been the problem with him he had some of the same symptoms happen to him that happen with us. I do 100% agree with you about going the more all natural route. I just think that he is to young to be put on meds. Now if it was something serious YES meds by all means. But as I overcame this by changing things that I did I believe that with changing his diet everything will work out. |
Thanks I wondered about that. To tell you the truth I think that the vet was trying to get xrta money out of us since we have pet insurance on him & we don't have to pay for visits & to top it all off she couldn't even tell us what we could do to make sure that this never happens again but to maybe change his food & that might work she didn't even recommend a good dog food for him to try. She did however tell us that we would have to keep buying the meds for him & that she didn't know of an all natural way to prevent this. Which I thought was strange. |
Awww I wish I had advice for you but I hope little Ivan feels better soon!!! Good luck with his dog food! |
If you are not comfy with your vet you should for sure change. I take savannah to a place my daughter volunteers at once in a while and her friend is a vet tech there. They have 4 wonderful vets and run a spay and neuter program and vet care for those who can't afford it as well with their mobile unit and its 5mins drive from my house. They are so understanding and amazing with me and she told me after reading the can of that dog food that is sure sounded good enough for her to eat and it was expensive but it was fine to feed her the 1/4 cup in the morning and for dinner and if I found her too thin up it a bit and if I found her getting pudgy to lower it a bit. There are so many wonderful vets out there and it takes a special one to put up with us yorkie mamas |
I hope Ivan feels better soon. |
