Is Layla eating too much? Layla is 5 months & two weeks old and about 4.6lbs the last time I weighed her. I previously posted here about Layla gaining 1lb in a month....well, oh my God, she gained an entire pound in 2 weeks!! She went from 3.4lbs to 4.4 when she was four & 1/2 months old. Coincidentally, it was about the same time I changed her food to mixing Blue Buffalo hard food with Blue Buffalo soft food. I think I am giving her way too much food maybe. She does look a little pudgy...lol, its just when I'm putting the food in the bowl it looks so little I add more! Then when she's eating it I look down at her stomach and imagine how small it is and how in comparison maybe I did give her a little too much. Anyway holy cow I did not expect as many growth spurts as she has had. Over all I'm thrilled she's thriving! I really did not want her to exceed 5lbs though because I take her pretty much everywhere I go and I have a bad back as it is. Carrying her anywhere for long periods of time is going to be tough if she exceeds it (but what can I say, regardless I will sacrifice because I love her!). When will she slow down in the growing process? I'm pretty sure I'm overfeeding her, but I'm not sure. Anyone have pictures of how much they feed their babies? What do you guys think? I will take a picture of her later today and post it :) EDIT: Also! How long did it take for babies to stop sniffling after the bordetella shot? She got it two weeks ago and since then her sniffling has subsided but she does still do it occasionally. Would it be ok to give her the next shot this Thursday or should I wait? |
Well, she is still a puppy. I hardly ever actually see overweight puppies but it's definitely important to not over-feed to avoid future weight problems, but you don't want to under-feed either. You are supposed to be able to feel their ribs easily when you rub along them... and a nice 'tuck' should be seen (sometimes, if they have a lot of hair, you can't. But when they are all wet from a bath you can see their figure better). Jackson is 2yrs old and a healthy 16lbs. He eats 1/2 cup per day of Orijen kibble (1/4 cup in the AM and 1/4 cup in the PM). Both times a little more than a teaspoon of wet food is added. He also gets some treats throughout the day and a bully stick every day. A puppy will need more food than an adult dog though since they are still growing. Jackson was 6lbs at 12 weeks, then went to 8.6lbs by 17 weeks old, and was 12lbs by 6 months old. He's now 16lbs. He gained 4lbs after he turned 1 year old, I think mostly in muscle. I've never seen a 5 month old stay the same weight... so expect her to grow some more. 6-7lbs is still a very small dog. |
