Cooked chicken breast -- how much per week? So, I was curious. I'm getting tired of spending so much money on dog treats. It seems to me it'd be a lot cheaper to use chicken as training treats sometimes rather than buying so many dog treats that I go through so quickly. We do a lot of clicker training so we go through a lot of treats. Do you think I could boil just a plain chicken breast and keep it in the fridge for maybe 5 days and give him little bits throughout the week? As training treats? He's 16lbs and eats 1/2 cup of Orijen per day (with a bit of wet food in every meal), how much chicken would be too much? I would probably do this once every other week so it wouldn't be an eating chicken every single day thing. |
The ratio of 60% dog food to 40% anything else will ensure he's getting the proper doggy nutrition. You could prepare the chicken for treat size, then freeze it. Take it out and thaw it before use, an hour or two ahead of time. Any remainder will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge. If you're really feeling lazy, you can buy the precooked chickens at Costco, chop it up and use that. For $5, it'll probably be cheaper than cooking the chicken yourself, Just be sure to get the plain, unseasoned type.... :D PS: for anybody else (as the Britster is anti-grains) I use Gerber's Graduates Puffs as treats.... over 200 treats per container at $2-3 .... can't beat that... and about 20 different flavors.... |

I'm not *totally* anti-grains ;) I like grain free foods for the most part but I often buy treats with grains in them. I actually might try these Gerber Puffs, Jackson is so picky though, but since they are so cheap, I might just buy a container to try... not sure if he'd like them or not. He even turns his nose up at Zuke's now. Lol. Picky picky dog! |

Actually, there's 438 pieces:eek:. 74 per serving (for a child) 25 calories,1 gm sugar, 15 gm potassium, 6 gm Total Carbs, per serving % Daily Values: 4- 4% Calcium, 10-15% Iron, 20-10% Vit E, 15-10% zinc for infants (1st #), and children 1-4, (2nd #) This is from the Sweet potato flavor. |
Great question Brit.....Reesie is not thrilled about his Wellness Pure Rewards Jerky treats at Puppy Class anymore and the thing he LOVES is cooked chicken!!! He loves his jerky treats when he is home and Snick gets them though...go figure!!! I saw the Gerber graduates at the store the other day, but they have wheat in them. :( I am not anti grain either, but I don't want to put wheat in their diet. But I want to try them so bad LOL!!!!! Mine don't like Zuke's either. They are on a 100% raw diet so I think I'll try the boiled chicken breast. :) Viv |
We have always used chicken breast for treats. I bought one of those little food dicers and after I boil and cool the chicken, I put it through the dicer and it made perfect sized treats. I have also used turkey, eye round beef or even pork tenderloin as these are very lean cuts. I would say I stick mostly with chicken but I'll switch to eye round if it's on sale or whatever. Pork is least used, and usually only if I make it for us which is pretty rare. For training purposes, I use meat but for indoors reinforcement of training, I will use veggies like a sweet potato also cubed or green beans. This is the food dicer I have. https://www.chopwizard.com/index.php...tk3hmla78e9vt3 |

I used steamed chicken as treats. I buy a large bag of frozen chicken at Walmart's and a box cooking steam bags. I have 4 dogs so a breast last for 2 days as their training treats. They love the chicken and my vet said Chloe can have it on her low residue diet. But I hated cleaning the pot after boiling the chicken and I read about someone using the steam cooking bags on YT and it's a great idea. I put the frozen breast in the bag and microwave it for 6.30 and it's done. Now I want a chopper! I love time saving tips :D. |
