tear stains What is a good product to use to get rid of tear stains? I have a white yorkie and the stains look really bad. |
1 Attachment(s) I have been using Angel Eyes for about 3 months now and it worked almost instantly! I bought the chicken flavor one and sprinkle it on Oliver's food each day and he actually enjoys the taste of his food more! I highly recommend it and even did some research on it prior to purchasing it and haven't found anything wrong with it thus far. Good luck!! :) |
What do you do about the immediate problem, the staining that is already there? |
I just posted to this same question in another thread: When the area around the eyes stays moist due to excessive tearing, red yeast bacteria start to develop into the staining you see. The causes of excessive tearing can be many and varied, including but not limited to genetics, health, diet, fleas, bacterial infection, ear infections, cutting teeth (in puppies), irritation, high mineral content in the dog's drinking water, blocked tear ducts, etc. Keeping the eye area wiped clean daily will help and you might even consider having your dog's groomer carefully shave the area so as to prevent excessive red yeast bacteria build-up. Also Many common dog food ingredients can cause staining in some dogs. What are you feeding? Your water can be the problem, too. Also you could give them ONLY Distilled water to drink...I've heard that really helps! As you trim the stained fur.....and deal with the possible issues..it should whiten up. I don't think there's a quick fix. I would wipe the eyes 2-3x/day with a sterile 2 x 2 gauze pad with a contact lens saline solution (buy the store brand) and that could keep the staining to a minimum. Eyes weeping is mainly caused by lack of good nutrition, but there could be another reason. Putting your dog on a premium food most of the times helps with this. |
1 Attachment(s) I purchased this tear stain remove by Gold Medal that seemed to work pretty well however my yorkie is dark and not white so I don't know how well it will get the stains out. It's $7.99 from Petsmart, hope you find something useful! |
There is no such thing as a white yorkie can I see a picture of your dog? |

In one of the threads yogurt was mentioned. I am trying that now and will see how it works. I think it said 1 teaspoon a day. I didn't think it would hurt to try!! :) And Rosie loves it! |

I'll have to agree with Wabbit above that you should check into food choices. My baby used to have a lot of tear stains and that went away when I switched his food. Feeding the right food does matter. I feed the brand Orijen but I'm sure any of the premium dog foods will do just fine. |
