Double Canines?
 

I recently brought my yorkie, Sully, to the vet. She discovered he had double canines and suggested i have them extracted. He's a year and 4 months so he most likely wont be losing anymore teeth. The vet said it would cost around $400 to have it done. Im wondering tho does it have to be done or can Sully live life just fine with them? Im all for making sure my baby bear is happy and would be willing to spend the money but i also dont want to be jerked around by my vet.

Your vet is absolutely right. Because there is such a slim chance that they will fall out, they should be pulled. Double teeth can cause a bad bite, bacteria to be trapped, pain, and further periodontal issues.

When I had my Bailey neutered His adult canines had not come in yet, When they did come in his babies remained and I had to get them removed. It is for the best.

You will have to have it done or it will cause a lot of problems down the road. All small dogs tend to have problems with their teeth. $400.00 does seam expensive... I had Remy's pulled when she was spayed (just last week.. she is doing fine) and my vet charged about $25.00 per tooth. But.... she was already asleep and had the other medications needed so that charge was just for the pulling of the teeth. Do you have to have your baby altered? If so, do it at the same time or have teeth cleaned to make the cost more reasonable. Just my thoughts anyway.

Sully has already been neutered. The vet said it was expensive because he would need to be put under again. She was also going to do a routine dental cleaning while he was alseep. Is $400 an okay price or should i call other vets in my area?

If you trust your vet... that is so important more that the money... I would say stay with that vet. I am not sure why the vet didn't check the teeth when sully was neutered.. but there is most likely a good reason. Just being put under and teeth cleaning can be expensive.

But just think, if the teeth are not pulled and his teeth not cleaned timely he could have a lot of other health issues.

You say that your baby is 1yr and 4months. Did your vet not notice this before? I think $400.00 is quite expensive. To say the least, you haven't used that vet too many times, right? Shop around for another quote. He should have seen this when you first brought your baby in.

The vet i use has a reputation of being quite expensive. The only reason i bring Sully there is because its the only 24 hour one in my area which i thought would help in case of emergencies. I've only had Sully for a year and he's been to this vet maybe 3 times now.

$400 including a full dental in your area sounds within the ballpark to me.

$400 is what it cost for me, but I have only one vet in the area, it cost $300 for the anesthesia alone, and then the rest was for the two canine removals. I do feel the vet here charges higher prices, but we have very little choice in the matter.

I am in Miami, I have a great vet.. not the most expensive.

When I had Bailey ( 25 lb shih tuz) neutered the vet I was using at the time quoted $400.00 -- I call Bravo who I quite using because he moved his clinic farther away... he quoted $185.00. I went to Bravo.

For Remy I had her spayed, teeth pulled, blood work (someone I highly respected on here recommended blood work before spaying) and a few small things that were "freebies" like anal gland was impacted and nails trimmed for
$525.00
I could have had her spayed at the local humane society for between $25.00 and $85.00. I just could not do it. I was afraid they were more experienced with larger dogs not 3.5 Remies. Yes money is very tight for me, but it was my decision so I went with my vet.

Also, 24 hour Vet clinics will always be more expensive... they are geared to emergencies. If you had another vet, and then had an after hour emergency you would/could still go to the 24 hour clinic.. been there done that.
So look at the long picture.... yearly check ups, minor illness that will happen.. maybe another vet is the way to go.. or at least check into.
