I feel sorry for little Bay. What kind of surgery is she going to have? You have had some excellent advice from some very good people up here. All of them hoping for the best. Please keep updating and I'll say a prayer for you and Bay.

Basil was sold to me at the age of 8 weeks. When I was at the vet 2 weeks ago I got an xray done, and she has a HUGE pocket in her colon. Right near her butt exit. Her whole large intestine was filled with fecies. The doc said it wasn;t good at all to see that for her age. He said it is a good thing that there wasn't any in her small intestine. The surgery will have to do with cutting out the pocket, or pouch and reconnecting it to her anus. It was explained in short detail to me. We will be doing another Xray to see the progress. The vet did say he is going to recommend me to a specialist before we jump to the surgery. We have had her on a high fiber diet since our last vet visit. It helped alot, but the part that helps the most is the enemas. She is getting very frustrated with her enemas the last couple of days, and the release hasn't been as good as before, so I am hoping her colon is empty enough! I don't know what more to say at this time, but she is due for her spaying when she gets 4 pounds. I am going to see if they can do the surgery at the same time, depending on if I can get the spaying vet and colon vet to meet in the operating room. The less surgery the better... I am up and down in my emotions with this. I got my puppy as a long time companion. Me an my fiance do not have kids and Basil was my smile when I came home from work. I never knew that these kinds of problems existed in dogs. I want to get a copy of the Xray so I can post it on here. and for possible court...

I am so truly sorry for your baby. I would be frustrated too if I was her, but if it helps then what can you say? Please keep posting on her, we are following you...

I am sorry to hear of these issues. You are doing so well taking care of her. It's so difficult coming home with a sick puppy when the beginnings should be of joy. Offering my prayers for you both.

Now I understand. I hope that if the surgery is necessary that you can have it done at the same time as the spay. I can imagine the emotional roller coaster, but stay positive. Your vet knows the problem and how to fix it if necessary. Basil will continue to be your smile for many years to come.

I love this forum. I enjoy talking with all of you guys! It helps me stay positive through this! I am glad I am am member on here. We got our appointment today at 2:40 Florida time. I will post later on the diagnosis. I do foresee another XRay today to get an inside look at the situation. I'd say I am close to the amount I spent on her with these vet visits, that aren't including my normal what to does at a puppy mommy. Shots. Heart guard. Flea baths. Not that we have fleas. Round 3 of shots will be on schedule for this week. Starts next heartguard number 2 most likely tonight after dinner. I will get back on here later and tell you all about the vet.

How did the exam go? Keeping Basil in my thoughts and hoping for good news.

I have the xrays. tried to scan them but it didnt work out very good. so i am trying to figure out how to get a good picture of them. we have a new medicine to soften stool. the doc told me to give her 1cc and that i may have to do less cause it might give her diarhea, well his wasn't kidding. i got a pup with a sore butt, diarhea, and the beginning of another rash. its never ending. the medicine is called lactulose. it was wwwaaayyy to strong for her. she has severe diarhea. i didnt even give it to her today, cause she still has diarhea. and a leaky butt.. i wish i had the answer. vet says lets give her a bit more to grow and hope she grows out of this... he said he will be recommending a specialist shortly if this does continue to persist. all her fecies was out of her colon though! so i did good with the enemas! she is only passing what is in there now for what she eats during the day. but the pain is something we need to manage. he wrote these words down on her chart. constipation, obstipation, and dyschezia. look them up. it makes sense.

Maximo 02-08-2011 04:42 PM

I'm sorry you didn't receive better news at the vet. :( However, glad that you and your vet are on top of the problems. Hang in there and stay positive.

You may want to start a new thread in the "sick/injured forum" so that more people see your posts. There are many people here who have seen just about everything in Yorkies and they will be able to offer support.

Sending best wishes to your little girl.

Poor Basil. I am a little confused on the above. He wants to wait to see if she outgrows this and will be recommending a specialist shortly. Shouldn't he recommend a specialist now and then see what they say. This should be your decision to either take her to a specialist now or take his advice and "wait and see". I hope for the best. Please keep us informed.

Sherri82 02-08-2011 06:54 PM

it is my decision. i got to do what i can afford. i do not have credit cards. i pay cash for everything. so if i do not have the funds for the specialist i need to save for it. they cost 145 for a consultation, nothing else. just to talk about her situation. i will be able to explain more when i can get a good picture of her xrays.;)

You could look into Care Credit, which if I understand correctly, allows you to pay over a 12 -24 month period with no interest.

Care Credit is the best answer for that! It is like using a payment plan but through a credit type of company. Best thing ever in cases like these. We don't have one yet but plan on it if the kids ever need something we can't afford. I would definately not let lack of cash flow be the reason the baby Basil doesn't get the help needed. There is always a way to pay even if it means care credit or a credit card or even a loan. These babies are too precious not to give them whatever they need and if a specialist is needed i would definately get one no matter how you have to pay for it. good luck and prayers coming your way.

My second Yorkie weighed only 3 lbs. when she was grown and early in her life she had G-I problems with vomiting, malaise, painful BM's, pus in diarrhea, blood in diarrhea, irritated anus, swollen anal glands, etc. After I had spent over $500.00 twice at the vet within 10 days during June of 1991 and she had five medications at home which she had been on over 1 1/2 weeks, vet consultation had been obtained and tried to no avail and still was laying around lifeless, vomiting and pooing pus-y, bloody diarrhea, and the vet was talking euthanasia, I had to try something else. I took her off all the cimitidine for reflux/heartburn, the anti-nausea drug, anti-gas drugs and very expensive two antibiotics(actually made her diarrhea much worse within 2 hours of taking them), took her off of ALL canned dog food(even Science Diet Sensitive canned dog food which the vet had suggested) and all human food of any kind -cooked rice, mashed potatoes, canned pumpkin, chicken broth, etc; and treated her with plain old common sense treatment: tiny, titered doses of Kaopectate and fed her only Science Diet Sensitive Diet dry kibble(she got sick on the Science Diet Sensitive canned dog good) for the rest of her life. Her nausea, malaise, vomiting, diarrhea and anal gland problems cleared up within 2 days on this diet and OTR drug and she absolutely thrived from that point on. I could not believe the dramatic change in her condition on this regimen. I stuck with it and soon phased out the Kaopectate. After that, for the rest of her life, she occasionally had a dry-looking stool but never seemed uncomfortable at all with passing it. I occasionally would sort of cook the kibble with water in the microwave, cool it and feed it to her warm, kind of like warm oatmeal. She ate this with relish at one feeding but when the dry kibble was left out in her dish, she never ate much at any one time but would return to her dish during the day until full. Some days she ate very little and other days she fed frequently. Sometimes, I would sort of overcook the moistened kibble until it was almost dired out, cool it and dry it some more on a tray and serve it to her as treats. Most of the time she ate the kiddlbe dry. She loved this food however she got it. Science Diet Sensitive dry kibble saved that little girl's life and kept her G-I tract and anal glands nearly normal for the rest of her 12 1/2 years. I say "nearly" normal since she got terrible diarrhea and gas if anyone else ever fed her ANY human food or regular dog food or treats. She also foraged in the back yard when I turned my back and occasionally had gassy rumblings in her tummy after that for which she got treated with a titered dose of Pepto-Bismol and a warm heating pad which she was allowed to lay on for a while but never left unattended on it. I assumed the gas was from foraging but it could have just been her delicate G-I tract that was just so touchy almost anything could irritate it - even the Science Diet Sensitive kibble, I guess. But her gas bouts were not frequent and she was very rarely constipated on this dry kibble Science Diet Sensitive regimen and she never had further diarrhea at all as I never allowed her to eat any human food. Occasionally an informed guest(I told all visitors of her inability to eat human any human food safely) would sneak her a tidbit and the poor little thing always paid the price by being ill within a few hours after the know-it-all guest was long gone. But I watched her suffer until she got it all out of her system and could return to her benign Science Diet Sensitive kibble and all would be right with the world again. Needless to say, if I ever found out who fed her improperly, that person was so-informed kindly but firmly as to the horrible suffering they needlessly caused the poor little dog and they were oh, so sorry after the fact.

My current Yorkie, Tibbe, weighs 5.3 lbs., can eat ANYTHING and has never vomited or had a loose stool. He has spit up slightly after eating too many treats but has never heaved emisis or had any diarrhea and he is 3 years old. I can't believe my blessed life with this dog after 12 1/2 years of little Jilly's delicate digestion. My very first Yorkie, Scotty, had a delicate G-I tract also and had to eat dry kibble though it wasn't for sensitive stomachs. Good luck working through your little dog's G-I issues but with a little love and common sense, you will both make it through this tough time. And yes, go ahead and do without something else and get your baby to the vet as needed but if you ever get to the point where the vet says the little dog is not responding to any treatment, the consulting vets aren't offering anything helpful and he starts discussing euthanasia due to the severe G-I problems with their resultant miserable quality of life, you might give my regimen a try as a last ditch effort. But veterinary treatment cannot be forgone until there is no further help there.

yorkietalkjilly 02-23-2011 11:27 AM

Sherri I have thought about you and Basil several times today and am praying for you both. Hang in there and your smile will make it back when Basil is well.
