changing from raw to ? need advice sammy is 5 1/2 yrs old now and has been on raw and honest kitchen now for a couple of years. do you think i should keep him on it or change foods? is there too much protein in the raw for him at this age? too fatty for him? at what age are they seniors ? |
Raw diets are not high in protein. Many premium kibbles have protein around 48%. IIRC, a raw diet contains less than 20% protein. Same with Honest Kitchen. As far as fat, that would depend on what kinds of meat/cuts you are providing for him. If your dogs are thriving on their current diet, there's no need to change. Incidentally, we also feed an Honest Kitchen and raw combination diet. It works wonderfully for my four crazies. Also, the quality of Honest Kitchen foods is unmatched by any other commercial dog food offered on the market. |
Why change if your dog is doing well on it? 5 1/2 years old is far from being considered a senior for a Yorkie, imo. Considering they can live to be 15 or more. |
Some bladder issues can be treated with diet. Really depends on the diagnosis... I can't advocate a raw diet, but it is doubtful that a balanced raw diet caused this problem. I'll go back to - it depends on the diagnosis whether or not it would be very dangerous to continue. Raw food is mostly moisture, so it has to be converted to dry matter basis. There is a thread about this in the YT Library. Most raw foods (premade) are 40+% protein when converted. |

I agree that a 5 year old yorkie is not a senior. |
