Spayed or Not to Spayed Bella is going to be 6 months now & we still have not decided if we want to have her spayed. I say yes but my partner says no. She would like for her to have 1 litter with the breeder that we got Bella from which is my best friend & that's all breeds is Yorkies & she already has a stud ready because she has like 6 of her own. We had 2 Bichons & had them spayed & nudered but Bella my partner just doesn't want her to go through what the other 2 did which wasn't bad at all!! Any input please so I can show my partner everyones opinion. Thank You:) |
She is worried about what Bella will go through if she is spayed. Ask her if she has considered all of the risks involved if you breed Bella. Ask her if she is ready for a C Section which does often happen with yorkies...does she not think that would be "going through a lot"? And, are you both ready for a possible disaster of and possibly taking care of her babies if Bella is either sick and unable to...or dies? Breeding is a lot more involved than many people realize. I am sure others will give you lots of feedback about that. |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-answered.html Here are some things to consider if you want to breed. And below are some risks and benefits of spaying: American College of Theriogenologists It is usually considered best to go ahead and spay. That is what I would do. |
My vet also says that if you spay before her first heat, it greatly reduces her risk of getting mammory cancer later in life. I'm doing it at 5 1/2 months b/c her mom was 6 months when she first went into heat (just to be safe.) I'm sure others on here with more knowledge can elaborate on that. Is there a specific reason why you want to breed her? |
I say spay! My parents own a Purebread German Shorthair Pointer and had plans to breed her. Well they never ended up breeding her and also never got her spayed and just recently (this past New Year's Eve) had to go in for emergency surgery because her uterus was infected. She almost died and my parents felt terrible. Plus the surgery and hospital stay were upwards of $2000.00. I think it is better to just do it while they are young and get it over with. |

The infection is known as pyometra and is very serious. With each heat a dog goes through the risk of pyometra increases. Agree with Ladyjane too, in that the risks or problems with a full term pregnancy are greater than dangers associated with spaying. |
Simple answer. Spay |
I would spay after her first heat. JMHO. Too many risks with pregnancies in Yorkies. |
You've gotten some great advice, I just don't understand how anyone can think pregnancy is easy, even if things go well. I hope you do what's best for Bella and stand your ground. By the way, most yorkes need a few teeth pulled with a spay, they don't lose all their baby teeth on their own, and it's best to have this done at the same time as a spay. |
I'm with the others...spay her! |
Yep, spay her! I agree! |
Spay, spay, spay. If you don't agree, look at the hundreds and hundreds of yorkies currently up for adoption on various rescue sites. There are too many dogs and not enough homes. End the needless suffering of dogs and spay your little girl. Many people buy pups from breeders with good intent of raising them and taking care of them. Unfortunately, many of these dogs end up at the pound (yes, even yorkies!). Vinnie, my older yorkie, was dropped off at a pound when his owners decided they simply didn't have the time for him. Alex met the same fate at barely 4 years of age. |

Please spay her. I was at the shelter I volunteer at today and they had so many dogs. puppies and cats come in just in 1 week. There was a silky/yorkie, 3 chiahauha's a blood hound, 6 month old german shepherd and that's only a few. Plus a pit bull they took in had 11 puppies last night. I think everyone who is even thinking of breeding should spend a day or two at a shelter. Look in the eyes of these poor babies who have no idea why they were dumped in this scary place. There are too many homeless animals to just breed for the heck of it. |
Spay. |

How sad. :( |
We have two vets we alternate with and neither will spay/neuter before 6 months. Plus they always say, be sure as you can't undo it. So many different points of view on the matter. Our one vet does encourage to spay/neuter after 6 months if you're sure you won't ever want to breed and the other said (paraphrasing) that once they've had their first heat, their body is "pregnant" insomuch as it prepared for getting pregnant and that doesn't go away in between heats thus it doesn't hurt to go unspayed for the first 3-4 years and then by then if you don't want to breed spay, as generally speaking uterus problems don't develop before then on an unspayed female. Now, I realize there's always the exception to the rule and someone will say their 18 month old unspayed dog had issues, but according to the vet that is the exception and not the rule. So think carefully about breeding, make your decision and then be prepared to stand by it. |
Bella is going to be SPAYED! |

Can anyone tell me if they had any troubles or anything after spaying? I have had this done with my other 2 but they were Bichon's & this is our 1st Yorkie so I don't know if there will be any side affects with this breed. Thank You |
I have never had any issues following a spay. One thing I do suggest is that you give her pain meds for the first couple of days at least. Some vets don't really see the importance of pain meds which I totally do not understand. While pups do not show pain they do have it. It is natural for them to hide pain. |
Can you please tell me what kind of pain meds I should give her? |
My vet gives them Bupranex. |
My baby isnt old enough yet to get spayed, but as soon as she gets her rabies shots, I'm making an appointment to get her fixed. She just seems too tiny to have healthy babies. She was born to a tiny momma and because there wasnt enough room for her to grow in the womb, her rib cage was squished. It grew like that, and now it sticks out more than normal. It feels like she has a big knot on her ribs. She is gonna be bigger than her momma was, but I still cant picture breeding her. I still feel shes too tiny. |

You are being very smart in making this decision. How sad for her about her ribs. It sounds like her momma is too tiny to be having puppies. |

Rosie did fine after she was fixed. It was hard on me because I hated seeing her that way. But she bounced back quickly. |
