how much cooked oatmeal = 200 grams
 
My kitchen scale is broken and I don't want to run to the store tonight. Does anyone know how much cooked oatmeal equals 200 grams? I'm supposed to feed Pippin 200 grams of cooked oatmeal a day. I have the oatmeal cooked but I don't know how to portion it out.

I've looked online but I'm not sure they are giving measurements for cooked or uncooked oatmeal.

I would say this is an estimate...I'm getting different numbers as I look around.
I feed about 175 g of rice a day and that is about 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups cooked or 1/2 to 2/3 cups per meal.

Thank you!!!!! What I found must have been uncooked. With my calculations I would be feeding Pippin 2 cups a day. I have a huge amount of oatmeal cooked compared to how much fish I cooked. The fish was easy to figure out because the bag gave the weight by grams.

I'm sure Pippin would prefer my calculations. Since he's been on the prednisone he is starving all the time. He is waking me up in the middle of the night to eat.

I think if you do 1/2 to 2/3 cups of oatmeal per meal twice a day you will be ok until you get your scale fixed. I am finding different numbers on the oats though. Maybe someone else is more familiar with the oatmeal. I can cook some up tomorrow and let you know for sure after I weigh it. I have quaker rolled oats on hand.

Who recommended a cup of oatmeal per day? That seems like quite a bit, but I'm not an expert.

107Barney gave me the name of a vet in Boston who specializes in nutrition. I had my phone consult today. Until I get the actual diet she is making for Pippin she said to give him 100 grams of tilapia or cod, and 200 grams of cooked oatmeal, a day. Pippin weighs 9 pounds so that could be why he would get a cup.

The consult was the best money I have spent in a while. My vet hasn't had many cases of IBD, and it was reassuring to have the other vet confirm that she thought we were going the right route on meds.

No one recommended a cup.....the recommendation was 200g per day, cooked. I thought that was about a cup to 1 1/3 cups but I'm getting different #s by brand. It's not a lot of oatmeal IMO for a dog on home cooked. As for who recommended it, a veterinary nutritionist did.

I put the extra oatmeal in baggies. Pippin could use some more weight on him. After these episodes from the IBD he doesn't have an ounce of fat on him. I can't see his bones because of his hair, but I can feel them.

Feeling the ribs is ok but if you have them wet and can SEE the ribs, that is too thin.

It would be estimated at 1 and 1/2 cups (taking it right from an old recipe of Ellie's from same nutritionist). Actually, for us it was 66g is = to about 1/2 cup. 66 x 3 is 198, so close enough.

QuickSilver, just to give you an idea (this is probably what kibble would look like pre processed - tons of grain for most brands). Ellie is supposed to get around 2/3 cup of rice per day. She is 5-6 pounds, so that sounds like a ton. But her diet is still 28% protein. It's just lower in fat, so more carbs had to be added for calories.

Good explanation Ellie May. At first it sounded like a lot to me too but then I had to remind myself that our kibble is dehydrated and compressed. So we think they eat so very little, but it is a lot in small pieces. :)

OP -- Good luck with the new diet! Hope you can keep the IBD under control. Glad you were directed to a good nutritionist by 107barney! She's a good person!

Thank you for the encouragement. 107barney has been a great help, and several other YT members. I'm very lucky to have this forum for information. I hope we can get the IBD under control. My regular vet has had Pippin on Hill ID, ZD and he still got sick on both of those. That's why I'm trying this route.
