For those who home cook... what amount do you feed? Do you only feed twice a day or 3 or 4 times a day? |
2-3x daily. Caloric requirement should be figured and then feed for optimal weight. They are all so different. Ellie eats double what she should need and is still skinny. |

I am using a diet formulated by a pet nutrionist, with supplements, however, there was no feeding schedule or feeding guidelines given. |
Because calories vary so much depending on the ingredients, I can't give you any suggestions for volume. Ellie (spayed and moderately active) was thought to need about 180 (will check when I get home) calories daily (plus more to gain weight). So that is 30 calories/pound for a spayed female who doesn't do anything strenuous. The nutritionist should figure this for you b/c they use a formula that takes energy requirement into consideration. Or if you really don't want to talk to them, then you could do 3/4 - 1 cup a day for an average size Yorkie. |
Thank you. I just talked with her on the phone and we'll be meeting tomorrow afternoon. |
Agree with Ellie May that a diet needs to be formulated for each dog. Our diets are weighed by the gram at preparation time. If I cook ahead I weigh and multiply ingredients. I add supplements and fish oil at mealtimes. It's a pretty large volume of food that I feed as they are on low fat diets. |
