Is Iams a good brand?? I'm wondering is Iams a good brand of dog food? My baby is eating Pedigree now (that's what she was on when I got her), she doesn't seem to really like it now that much. I bought a small bag of Iams to try. What is the best way to switch her to it? |
I personally would not feed my little baby Iams because of all the fillers and grains in that product. Iams is not a premium dog food and I only want to feed my baby the best. I want my little Levi to be around as long as he can. I feed Orijen puppy. Here is a link for other premium dog foods that you may want to check out. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html When I switched Levi's food I feed 75% old food 25% new food for two days then 50/50 two days and so on until he was switched. If he had any problems I would back off of the new food and then continue from there once he was tolerating the new food better. Good Luck! |
I would say no, Iams is not a good brand of food. Besides the horrible ingredients in it, they've also had issues with animal cruelty stuff in the past. IamsCruelty.com |
Have you tried Lifes Abundance? My little man loves it, and I love that it is so good for him! He will pick out the LA pieces, and spit his Halo, or Royal Canin food...It's kind of funny to watch :) |
I agree with what some others were saying about Iams. Orijen is what we feed here. |
I recently went through the food changing issue myself. I was given this link that rates different dog foods. I found it to be very helpful when I was picking out a new food for Rosie. Dog Food Comparison Chart - Dog Food Ratings of Premium Dog Food and Supermarket |
I bring Taycie to work with me. There is also another dog and he eats Iams.. If he isn't pooping 24/7 he is throwing up. He constantly has ear infections and his teeth are horrid... I wouldn't feed Iams either |
Yorkies eat very little... You aren't going to save much money at all by skimping on dog food. Even if a five pound bag of high quality dog food were to cost fifty bucks instead of 10-15 like it does, my boy would be more than worth it. Knox's favorite food is Taste of the Wild. He likes both the Bison formula and the Duck formula, but he does not like the Salmon. Taste of the Wild is made by a crappy company called Diamond, but it has good ingredients. Most importantly, he does really well on it. Good coat, small poop, minimal eye goop, pleasant puppy breath, etc... TOTW is also cheap. I get it at Tractor Supply Company for 9.99 per five lbs bag. His second favorite so far is Blue Buffalo Small Breed. He sometimes refuses the eat the little vitamin balls in it however, and I find them all over the kitchen. I also buy it at Tractor Supply. It's a little more expensive at $14.99 per five pound bag. A lot of people here feed Orijen. Knox doesn't like it though. He ate one bowl, and now he won't touch it. He'd rather starve. I paid 15.99 for a five lbs bag at a specialty store. It's a little harder to find. Now my horror story. My vet gave me a bag of Science Diet when Knox was 9 weeks old. Science Diet is just as bad as Iams. Knox got so constipated that he couldn't pass his stool. It was stuck in his little butt. He was pitiful. I took him to the vet. She wanted to put him on medicine but insisted I stick with the awesome Science Diet food. I took it upon myself to investigate. After a little research, I changed his food to Blue Buffalo on my own. Lo and behold, the constipation hasn't recurred again. I was upset because I feel like his vet was more concerned about promoting Science Diet than the health of my baby. She's a vet. She has to know how bad that crap sucks. Most of these cheap dog foods are filled with fillers like corn. The first ingredient in the list of ingredients on the back of the bag is the most prominent ingredient. Most cheap dog foods are mostly made of corn. Dogs can't digest it. It makes them have big poop. With premium dog foods, the dogs absorb most all of the nutrients, so their poops are much smaller. Tiny poops don't get stuck in the behind of a tiny 4 pound dog. Really the poop tells the tale. |
I've thrown out the Iams!!! With all the great input I've gotten from here and with all the research I've done, I'm trying my baby out on Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dry Food, for puppies through adult. So far she really seems to like it, we'll see! Keep your fingers crossed!! :) Again, thank you so much everyone!! You are a really great group of people!! |
I would stay away from any commercial food and only feed premium dog food. My dog eats "Chicken Soup for The Dog Lover's Soul " and she loves it. Other brands i tried were Canidae, Merrick,Wellness but she didn't like them much. Orijen is way too high in protein for yorkies and could cause liver/kidney damage! When looking at the crude protein percentage in the guaranteed analysis i was always told to not exceed 32%. |

Awww man...I just bought a bag of Eukanuba!!! |
I've had Toby and Speedy on Natural Balance and they've done quite well with it. Just recently switched to Wellness for a change of pace. Has anyone tried the Wellness Holistic kibble? I swear Toby will eat anything I put in front of him but ever since Speedy had a UTI, she has been very picky about her food and I have to "doctor it up" with a tiny bit of plain yogurt and she acts as if the only reason she's eating is so Toby doesn't eat her food. She never used to be so fidgety. I did notice when she went off the Natural Balance her eye goobers went away. I may try TOTW next. |

My dogs eat Nature's Variety and love it. All 4 of them do well on it. |
