"Neutered Food" vs. Feeding Less & Exercinig More My little 1yo girl was recently spayed and she went from 3.7lbs to 4.4lbs. Mind you it's winter and we are walking a bit less than when the days were nicer outside. The vet suggested Royal Canin Neutered Food. She hates it but loves the regular Yorkshire Royal Canin. What your guys' and gals' opinion on just feeding regular dry food mixed in with some veggies/meat and exercising her more for weight control? :aimeeyork |
WOW- you learn something new everyday, I didn't even know there was such a thing as neutered food- i have never switched my dogs food after being altered. I always make sure mine get exercise and I watch their weight to see if food should be adjusted up or down but that is it. Body condition is most important- some dogs have a growth spurt a little later- so just gaining weight doesn't mean anything. If she is getting overweight though- can't feel her ribs, etc. Then increase her exercise and decrease her food portions- you can also try adding extra fruits and veggies to her meal so she feels like she is getting the same amount with less calories. |

All those RC "Yorkie" specific foods, and breed specific formulas, are all a gimmick, in my opinion. |
Reduce caloric intake of a regular food. Add non starchy vegetables to fill your pup up. Exercise. Unless the vet is very specific that this foos is needed - in which case there may be extenuating circumstances.. |
