One year checkup - Questions for Vet? Ruger will be having his 1 year checkup this Friday. Other than the normal vaccinations and bringing in a poop sample is there anything I should be asking the vet about? Otherwise he's doing just fine with only a few behavioral issues. |

Your vet should also do a heartworm test with or without other routine blood work. |

Heart worms are tested by the blood I think. Rally easy and fast. You'll need to get heart worm prevention meds for once a month. We all use them. :) |

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will keep them in mind when we see the vet tomorrow. |
If he's due for a DHPP and a Rabies booster, don't get both tomorrow. Get the DHPP, then go back in 4 weeks for the Rabies. If the vet suggests a Lepto vaccine, refuse it at this time. This vaccine should be given by itself, if at all. Same goes for the flu vac, the dental vac, and any others he may suggest. IMHO, a minimal vaccine protocol is best for all Yorkies. Heatworm test and buy preventative. If he recently got neutered and you did the preop bloodwork then, you could skip it this time, maybe recheck his bloodwork in 6 months or so. Your vet should do a hands-on exam, he will alert you to anything he finds and make recommendations on a course of action. He should check his temperature (if elevated, no vaccines should be given), weight, eyes, ears, nose, mouth and teeth, feet: pads and toenails, knees, stifles, and hips (may check range of motion), skin and coat, listen to his heart and lungs, check his pulse, and his penis, butt, and anal glands. You may want to schedule a Bile Acids Test at this time, even if your vet sees no reason for it. Many Yorkies have Liver Shunt or MVD, and show no symptoms, even with normal results on the preop bloodwork. Sorry, looks like I am too late.... |
Thanks again for all the advice. We just got back from the Vet and all is well. The vet said Ruger is a very strong Yorkie and is very healthy. I asked about heartworms and he said he would only be concerned if Ruger was traveling a lot. Might have something to do with the altitude, but I don't know of any dog here that had heartworms. He did not spread the shots out (said he would if I really wanted him to but saw no reason) but when I asked about kennel cough he said he didn't want to over vaccinate Ruger at this time. He should be good 'till april on that, and they said to put off the shot until he has to be boarded again. I question my vet's decisions sometimes, but other vets and specialists, down in Denver, feel he's one of the best vets on the planet. Some of the decisions he makes regarding Ruger might have something to do with the fact that Ruger weighs in at 10.3 lbs. He admitted that certain precautions have to be taken with small Yorkies, but he doesn't see Ruger as small. Looking forward to summer, as I think the little guy can take me for a ride on my rollerblades. :aimeeyork |
Troy went for his yearly 2 weeks ago. At that time he was having some tummy issues so she opted not to vaccinate him ...only test for heartworms and a stool sample. Troy is very small (4.2 pounds at 18 months) and she vaccinates him in stages. We go tomorrow for distemper, bordatella and rabies. I might be missing one but don't think I am. I opted not to neuter Troy as a baby because of his size but he needs to do that as well as a teeth cleaning so we will schedule that as well. Sounds like you got all the questions answered and your guys got a clean bill of health. |
