Sick Puppy My 9 1/2 week old yorkie puppy just got diagnosed with a upper respiratory infection..any advice on treating this. The vet gave me some medication how long should it take for this to completely go away? Thanks :animal36 |
I don't have any advice other than to follow your vet's instructions and make sure she gets the needed medication. 9 1/2 weeks is very young to be away from her mother and litter; you will need to keep a close and watchful eye on her. So many things can go wrong with the very young, tiny babies. Please keep us posted. |
GOOD ADVISE RINGO1! The vet should have informed of how many days or until medicine finished. If not, please call and ask the vet. My baby came to me ill. My son thought it was car sickness since he drove 8 hours to get my "present". (Which he saved for and was trying to help me over the loss of my first yorkie.)The very next day I took him to the vet - he was 6 MONTHS old and barely 2 lbs, and still seemed very lethargic w/ chest noises. He had pneumonia! I was shocked someone would sell a young person a sick puppy!! Not to mention how bad my new baby must feel being scared and feeling that ill! It took several weeks, several vet visits, and was very costly. Luckily, we did nurse him back to health. I slept with one eye open for the first 10 days! Turns out it seems the seller sold my young son this very small dog due to now known health problems! But, I am so thankful to have him - sickly or not!! He is the joy of my heart and his first illness created a bond that was unbelievable! Take care of your baby and stay informed, it really helps. Little ones can go from "just not acting themselves" to VERY ill so fast. |
Welcome and congratulations. Sorry to hear your baby is sick. URI can take awhile to go away. The thing to watch for is that it doesn't turn into pneumonia. When I got one of mine and she had a URI I took her in every week for several weeks to have the vet check her out and make sure she wasn't going into pneumonia. With mine it took 3 months to completely clear up but she had other health issues that made it harder for her to shake it off. Each case is different so uou can call the vet to get their advice on how long they think it may last. Also, when they are so young and little they are susceptible to becoming hypoglycemic so make sure you watch for signs of that. I hope your puppy feels better soon. |
The vet told me he should be on the medicine for 14 days. Is it normal for him to want to sleep most of the day, he will walk around and play for a few mins then its back to bed for him. This is my first yorkie so I am new at this and not sure about a lot of things with him. Every dog I have ever had has been very healthy so I have not had to deal with anything like this. THANKS FOR EVERYONES HELP!! |

When my little one had kennel cough I would steam up the bathroom and sit in there with her for a little while each night to help her breathe easier- this might help your little one too, along with the meds. Remember your baby is very young to be home and sick, so he may sleep a lot- just make sure he is eating good and comfortable and then let him sleep as much as he wants. |
Oh thats another thing he will not eat, the other day he ate boiled chicken for the first time and it seemed like he loved it then they next day he got sick. We give him nurtical like 6 times a day to keep his sugar up because he has already had a spell with low blood sugar. He has been to the vet several times already and the vet keeps saying that he is healty. |
Well eating is another problem that we are having with him. The day before he got sick he ate boiled chicken for the first time and since then he will not eat anything we give him supplycal like 6 times a day cause we have already had a spell with his low blood sugar. We are trying to get him to eat baby food at the moment just pretty much trying anything that we think he might eat. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Just wanted to add that because he is newly removed from his Mom and littermates and that being a few weeks too soon, be sure to keep him warm. You could put a heating pad (set on 'Low' only) under one end of a kennel (one with a bottom) to give him a warmer spot to lay in if he prefers. Also, you should be seeing signs of improvement, if not, his antibiotic may need to be changed. Call your vet to discuss any concerns because with pups this young, you don't want to take any chances, and it is always better to be overly cautious with them. Always finish all medications unless told to stop by your vet. If you think (or know) that other people (including your vet) are going to think you're a little strange regarding your care of your pup, that's about where your level of concern should be... or up a few notches even. (and don't worry about what other people think either) |

Thanks! I feel like I have called the vet everyday since I have had him and they are prolly getting a little bit tired of me..maybe not! He is up playing right now he did not do this yesterday so maybe we are starting to get on the right track with him. He likes to lay on our air/heat vent its where he can still be the center of attention and warm at the same time, will this be enough to keep him warm? We also have a hugh furry bed for him with lots of blankets |
Maybe not the best bc the airvent may be too dry? Keep an eye on him for shivering.. a fever can make them lethargic, but he should be resting/sleeping more than he would be normally. Playing is a good sign, but don't let him overdo it. |
How do I know if he has a fever like what are the major signs I should look for because like I said he mostly sleeps right now so its really hard to tell. He does look much better today than he did yesterday his eyes are much brighter and he seems much more alert than he did yesterday! |
Hi there... At 9.5 weeks old (and for a few months ahead), he is still just a new baby (like human babies), he will sleep quite often. Plus he is on antib's which are probably making him more sleepy. Keep him warm and follow the Vet orders. Children's Vanilla Pedisure (w/fiber) is good to have on hand, when he won't eat. Most Yorkies love the taste. It has protein and nutrients ;) What food are you feeding him? |
As of now he pretty much just gets the supplycal. We keep food down for him at all times but he will not touch it. We give him pedialyte on days that we think he might not get enought water to drink and we just started him on baby food today but you have to feed it to him he will NOT eat out of a bowl. He acts like he likes the taste of the baby food so maybe this is a step in the right direction we just are not sure how much to feed him we use oral syringes to feed him everything that he gets. |
