Chronic ear infections. 8 year old female has chronic ear infections since she was born. No discharge of any kind, but inner ears always look swollen and sometime a little blood from scratching Always on meds. (liquid & pills don't remember name at the moment) but she's been on them so long that after awhile i just don't think they work anymore. Did have test done and i do give her special food with no (wheat/corn/etc.) Just in case she is allergic. Vet has informed us that only cure is remove eardrums (will be deaf) but at least not in pain and scratching all the time. Problem, must be done by a specialist $3,000. So that's out. Does anyone have any home remedies that help keep the swelling and pain down? HELP |
Have you tried Synotic to reduce the inflammation. It sounds like it is at least partially some type of allergy problem. Did you do an elimination diet? |
Ellie May, thank you so much no i have not tried that I will call my vet. first to make sure it can use that with the other meds i giving her. As for the diet elimination. Well i'm now only feeding her Bill Jac (from PetsMart) which apparently is good for dogs with allergies? Do you know of something better? She seems to be less itchy when she is eating that food. But it's so hard to tell. |
Have you tried Zymox? I use this product on Tatiana to clean and maintain clean ears. It works well. As far as your Yorkie's diet, have you tried home-cooking (yorkie-healthy) meals? Would you be interested in that? I do it for Tatiana. For her grains, I use oats, and sometimes, brown rice. Tatiana loves it, and she has no allergy issues. Hope this helps. |
Thank you very much MidnightUnicorn, I'm writing all these things down and will certainly follow up with them. I feel so bad for her and it's gone on too long. Can you give me just an idea of exactly what you are feeding her. I have been considering home cooking. I have 3 yorkies, maybe I can just cook their food once a week. One of them is a little overweight (rice?) What else do you make for them. I guess i can look up food for them. But hearing from someone who is already doing this will help decide which way to go. Thanks again. |
How much is she scratching? She needs a true allergy diet. Bil Jac isn't what you want. The vet can prescribe one or you could homecook. This is actually what I do. The recipe should be formulated by a veterinary nutritionist. Of course it will only help if it's a food allergy. Do you have old receipts with the names of meds you have tried? You can't use Synotic with other drugs in the ear. It's a steroid and I would highly recommend that you ask your vet about it. I've used Otomax and Mometamax and Zymox for yeast. Otomax is my favorite followed by Zymox. If you need to keep giving something for a bacterial or yeast infection (Synotic isn't for this), then you can give steroids at the same time. Has your vet tried that? Temaril-P has worked well for us as do short term injections of Kenalog. |

chicken breast veggies (broccoli, red bell peppers, and carrots) old fashioned rolled oats (or brown rice, or mix of both) non-fat yogurt Roughly, I use equal portions of everything to come up with 1/3 cup. I like to microwave the mixture a little bit to bring it to room temperature (as the yogurt makes the mixture cold. I know that's a bit much, but what can I say, I love Tatiana. :)) I feed Tatiana three times a day. I know that seems like a lot of food, but I think Tatiana needs that much. She's still very tiny (3 lbs), and has a waist, so she's not overweight. Also, Tatiana is very active. Oh. I finely mince the food because Tatiana eats VERY quickly, and sometimes swallows her food whole. One time, she choked on a piece of chicken. Thank goodness, the chicken went down. I was scared to death because I thought she may have been in danger. Ever since then, I finely mince her food. :) Hope this helps. |
Wow, that sounds really bad. I would first try a true allergy free diet, and maybe even going raw, slowly introducing one food item at a time into her diet to see if any of them cause problems (thus signaling an allergy). She also may have environmental allergies, and testing can be done for those as well. For some dogs, a simple Zyrtec (over the counter human allergy medication) can do the trick. An elimination diet, followed by formal allergy testing if the problem is not food-related, is really the only way to determine if allergies are her problem. Also, is there any chance that she could have developed an antibiotic resistant infection? |
