Taste of wild
 

Is this is a good feed? I am trying to find a new feed. Something I can find at tractor supply or petsmart. Blue buffalo, science diet naturals, taste of wild, wilderness? What's the best feed? Help, please :confused:

I can only comment on the taste of the wild because I was in petssmart over the weekend and ask the manager the same thing. She said the taste of the wild is a great food but they do not recommend it unless your dogs gets a lot more exercise to burn off the calories. She said the Blue, small breed was the best for little dogs that do not get a lot of exercise. That is my group. They are not big outside pups.they said that in petsmart the dog food is set up in isle by isle with the premium food in the first isle. She did show me a chart from Blue, that showed the same thing that she told me.Good Luck. Oh b the way my guys seems to like it real good. But of course I add to each of there food bowls,a tablespoon of boiled chicken,and bit of chicken broth, and a few small (about 4 pieces) of sweet potatoes. on top. They love that. The dry food does have veggies and sweet potatoes already in it. Good luck

Taste of the Wild
 

I have been feeding Taste of the Wild for over 2 years now. I have had good results with this product. TOW is an "all life stages" food and I have raised several healthy, active, happy pups on this kibble. The "kibble size" is perfect for the little ones - it is big enough to encourage chewing, but not big enough to be a choking hazard if they swallow it whole.

Definitely Taste of the Wild. :thumbup: My little group loved it and they did very well on it. They gained weight on a couple of other grain-free food brands but TOTW has less fat and calories than most other grain-free brands so they had no weight problems at all on it. I'm currently feeding Acana but I'm thinking about adding TOTW back into the rotation soon.

But, as others have pointed out many times - the best food for your pup is the one he/she likes and does well on. :)

That's not really true :) In general, Petsmart employees don't especially know what they're talking about when it comes to nutrition. Also, BB Small Breed has MORE protein and more fat than a few formulas of TOTW.

TOTW is not even *that* high protein/calorie/fat, compared to other grain-free foods. But with higher calorie foods, you simply feed less. That's the greatness of them... you don't use as much so you're really spending more money. The recent recall on BB kind of scares me too... but they caught it early so it's probably not a huge deal.

Crude Protein 29.0% min
Crude Fat 16.0% min

TOTW Sierra Mountain:
Protein: 25% Fat: 15%

TOTW High Prairie:
Protein: 32%
Fat: 18%

^^I agree with Brit. The Petsmart people are, of course, going to recommend brands they sell before ones they don't. ;)

I went back to feeding my guys totw.. we feed the pacific stream flavor wet and dry. It took them a little while to get use to it but they eat it. Its a good food and a decent price.

Thanks again everybody! I'm going to get a bag this week. How should I introduce it to the pups? Half TOTW and half the feed they are on now?

I feed Taste of the Wild roasted fowl and mine love it. It's also reasonably priced and you can get it at Tractor Supply.

So far mine haven't gained any weight on it, but I do limit how much they eat.

Is royal canin good for yorkies, I change from purina one to caninroyal and she loves it she always finishes her food . Nd when she would throw up when she would eat the purina one

I would have to disagree that in general most Petsmart employees don't know what they're talking about. I happen to work for Petsmart and not only me but basically all the employees in the store I work for know A LOT about nutrition. One of our trainers actually feeds raw to her dogs and offers it and recommends to customers. I know myself that I've recommended brands that we don't sell at Petsmart. Heck, I don't even shop at Petsmart all the time. If I find a deal better somewhere else, then I'll go there.

Maybe they do not recommend Taste of the Wild because they do not sell it. I wish they did! Our Petsmart does not sell it, the Petsmart Website does not sell it and the Taste of the Wild site does not list Petsmart in their "Where to Buy." Petsmart does sell Blue Buffalo so that is a conflict of interest when they recommend one over the other.

Then it must just be my Petsmart! LOL. I didn't mean any offense to you, sorry :(

I always cringe because every time I go into mine, I see the employees saying to new puppy owners "oh these are GREAT healthy training treats!" and they pick up the box of Milkbones sitting right next to the Wellness treats... it just makes no sense to me! And all the Nutro reps in there every weekend (I know they don't work for Petsmart) but still... lol. I've had mulitple employees ask me if I needed help when I'm looking at the treats and they all hand me the Nutro crap, and the Pedigree crap... and there's actually quite a few healthy treats now at Petsmart they skip over and don't even recommend.

I'm glad to hear your Petsmart is not like that! And in general, Petsmart seems like they're trying to step up in terms of nutrition.

We were thrilled to get a Petsmart near us but they are not the fonts of nutrition wisdom either. They asked if they could help me when I was reading labels in the dog food one day. So, I posed a few questions. The lady first looked blank and then made the fatal mistake of talking when she did not know! I don't mind at all if someone tells me they don't know something & then tries to help find an answer. But when they pretend to know, and talk out of the wrong end......ggrrrrrr! I got some bad unsolicited advice about feeding my puppies when a Petsmart employee came up while I was looking for a decent nipple to use with a syringe. I normally do not take my dogs or puppies into Petsmart, but I had to stop on my way home from the vet one day with one of the puppies from Ben & Sadie's litter. I actually had one of the employees try to take my tiny puppy right out of my arms! I had to pull away and say, "Please DON'T! He's not well!" She was just excited and wanted to hold such a tiny pup, but I would never do that without asking!

If Petsmart is really trying to step it up, they should offer some of the high premium dog foods! How about some Merrick Before Grain, Evo, Innova??? Even Petco has better selections. We don't have Petco tho.

On the other hand.....I hear GREAT things about our Petsmart trainers! I am going to sign Annie up for puppy classes after hearing some rave reviews from those who have been. The employees are always super pleasant and try to be helpful. So we have some good points too!

I think each Petsmart is diffierent. You are going to have both good and bad in areas of training, nutrition knowledge, grooming, and even the vet care offered (Banfield) at some. That is why it is so important to research our own breed and come with a pretty good knowledge base ourself. :)

I Was in the easton Md pet smart and they did carry the Taste of the wild. That is when the girl walked up to me, I ask, which was the best ,if she knew, She said she was trained that the TOTW was not good if you keep your pups in most of the time. Wel they do like it, but I might be making a trip back to petsmart tomorrow to exchange it for TOTW.

Knox likes the Duck and the Bison flavors of TOTW.
 

He won't eat the fish. I have a Tractor supply right down the street. It's ten bucks for a five pound bag. Orijen and other higher end foods cost 50% more. For the money it's the best deal, but money is not a huge factor with a yorkie since they eat so little.
