my baby had her spay today

My baby Maya (6 1/2 months old) had her spay earlier today and is now home with Mommy and doing great! I know it's a very routine surgery, but I was worried anyway....it's what I do ;)....and I'm just so glad she's back home! I've already been through all this with Bella (2 1/2 yrs old) of course, but the house just felt soooo empty without her! (I could tell Bella thought the house felt empty too :p) Anyway, just wanted to shout it from the rooftops!! :D My baby girl is home safe and sound......I feel so lucky!

Micah my love 01-04-2011 07:52 PM

So glad everything went well for your Bella :)

Glad to hear she's doing well! We all worry I think. Aren't they such a joy?

This makes me feel a bit better about my Rylie going in for her's on Friday... especially after reading about pups dying under anesthesia all week. I probably should have stayed away from that stuff huh?

Patti 01-04-2011 08:43 PM

I am glad she is home. It is always such a relief to have that behind you.

LaurenPatrice 01-04-2011 09:15 PM

Glad your puppy is home safe and hope she has a quick recovery!

Breny 01-04-2011 09:44 PM

OMG you guys are gonna make me go grey prematurely! 3 of my babies are getting spayed/neutered this week. I worry too, way to much!!!

So glad maya is home!!!! Kiss her for me!

RileyDC 01-05-2011 06:36 AM

Yaaay! Glad to hear she is doing well. :)

bellasmomok 01-05-2011 10:08 AM

Thanks to all for joining in on my mini celebration AND for your well wishes for a quick recovery!! Maya's a little firecracker, so already this morning my biggest challenge is keeping her from running/jumping so she can heal!!

Good luck to Rylie.....I'm sure everything will go well! I think as long as you have the pre-op bloodwork done and it's all normal, then your chances of having something like that happen are GREATLY reduced! And yes, you probably SHOULD have stayed away from all that!! ;) :p ;) Maya and Rylie can be "healing" buddies in a couple of days! :D

Oh my goodness, you will DEFINITELY have your hands full!! But you're used to that anyway, huh?! ;) She's quite the little kisser, so she was happy to get your smooch! :p Good luck to your babies!!!!!!!!! I know everything will go smoothly for them, and then you're biggest worry will be keeping them from bouncing around while they're healing! :D

mizzjenn 01-07-2011 02:25 AM

That's somethig I have been thinking about ever since I got my new precious baby! Thank God I still have some time before I have to take my baby! (She's only 12 weeks) But it is so good to know I am not the only one who worries about this! (sigh)

Micah my love 01-07-2011 02:33 AM

My boy did fine after his neuter, he seemed nothing happened

Rylie is doing well. Poor thing looks so sad though! She's so out of it. I'm just glad she made it through okay. Can't wait to hear that her healing buddy is doing well too!

Maya looked that way pretty much the whole first evening too :( I think she was probably a little uncomfortable, PLUS I'm sure being medicated made her feel very strange too....maybe a little scary. BUT, you'll be happy to know that by the next afternoon she was nearly back to her normal self! And today (which is 3 days out), she's totally her normal self....which is good, BUT it makes it very hard to keep her from being the wild child she is! :p

Don't worry Rylie....the worst is OVER!!!! :cheer:

:) Rylie says THANK GOD.

The vet has me keeping her medicated for awhile. The pain meds are mixed with anti-inflammatory meds, so I'll be giving that to her until we run out. I'm hoping that will keep her quiet until she's healed enough.

I feel so bad. She can't even whine/bark right probably from the tracheal tube... So I have to listen for these little wheezy noises that means she wants to potty. She can't get up from the potty position on her own either :( I have to help her stand back up.

Oh my goodness....poor little Rylie!! :( Maya didn't WANT to move much, but she didn't have any problems getting up from the potty position....of course, she only went out once the evening we brought her home, too...she mostly slept. (Bella was exactly the same way when she was spayed just over 2 yrs ago...wanted to sleep and didn't want to move much that first evening, but she was ABLE to move when she decided to.)

She also didn't have any trouble whining.....she whined for a bit when I picked her up at the vet's, during the car ride home, and then for just a bit once we were home too. It didn't surprise me...she's always been my crybaby! :p But I never heard ANY wheezy noises! Does the vet know she's making noises like that? If so, then I'm sure it's nothing to worry about (and might not be anyway???)....I'm sure every dog has a different experience.

I've been giving Maya the liquid Metacam that the vet sent home with her. After the first morning home I don't think she really needed it, but her pre-op labs were amazing AND she's a tough little girl...not sure I'd be able to tell if she DID need it, so I didn't think it would hurt to just err on the side of caution and give it to her!! (When Bella was spayed we found out about her liver issue, and so I only dosed her that first morning after and then didn't anymore because she didn't seem like she needed it at all....and Bella's NOT tough :p, so I would've known for sure if she did.)

Rylie....I'm sorry to hear you're so out of sorts today!! :( We'll be thinking about you and hoping you wake up tomorrow refreshed and feeling MUCH better!!! :D

bellasmomok 01-07-2011 02:50 PM

^^^ I just saw Rylie's pre- and post-spay pictures!! :( Makes my heart break! That's just what both my girls looked like....and wrapped up in their little blankets too!! I also noticed that she's a month younger than both my girls were for theirs, so that may account for the differences too....the pottying and the wheezy sounds?? Not sure, but could be. Anyway, she is just too too cute, and too too heartbreaking right now! :( Having just gone through that, I know how you must be feeling. I was sooooo sad because Maya looked so sad :( :( :(

Well the wheezy noises are an attempt at a whine. She doesn't make them all the time, only when she has to go potty. I think it might be partially do the the fact she hasn't had any water or anything either. Kinda like when we don't use our voices for a long time and don't drink anything... we get croaky. She apparently just gets wheezy. I'm not worried about it, it just makes my heart break. :(

Thanks for the well wishes!!! Healing buddies ftw! We'll all be fine in no time!

Gotcha! Maybe try dipping your finger in water and touching it to her lips. Maya wouldn't drink either when I offered her the water, but I wanted her to have SOME moisture.....tricky Mommy! ;) I also gave her boiled chicken and plain mashed potatoes (and used a bit of water to make it "creamier" and to get some water in her). This is what I did for Bella too, and both of mine ate that no problem, and no vomiting either!....I've heard that some dogs don't want to eat that first day though. It just seems like SUCH a long time for them to go without food and water thouhg....it KILLS me!!

Huzzah! Touching my watery finger to her lips enticed her to drink from the bowl!!! Thanks for the tip. I don't think she's dehydrated come to think of it because she got the fluids from the IV and is peeing like a racehorse (almost all of it water, no yellow coloring). I'm glad she drank something though.

I got her to take the Nutrical when we first got home (I worry about hypoglycemia). After the water I enticed her to eat a little itty bitty bit of a treat. She wouldn't touch her food.

Rylie is doing much better! She ate food this morning, but I limited the amount so she doesn't gorge herself and vomit. I am worried about her poop though. She finally went this morning, but it got stuck the poor girl... :( I had to help ease it out with a baby wipe. Is there anything I can do for her for that or will it be better now? It was the first time she went since the surgery.

I hope Maya is doing well too!!!

Glad to hear it!!! (My internet hasn't been working...sorry it took so long to respond! :() Maya is doing great too....it's murder keeping her from running and jumping! When she HAS run/jumped, I've noticed her incision gets a little red, so I'm working even harder to keep her still for a few more days.... Little monster!! ;) Hope Rylie is still doing marvolously! (Maya didn't poop for 36+ hrs, and her first one was teeny tiny. It's been just like normal since though.)

Glad to hear Maya is doing great! Good luck keeping her contained! Rylie is getting more active and finding more interest in her incision  I expect the next week to be a full on fight to keep her from hurting herself. :p

She's doing better poop wise. Her first one was very tiny and hard for her to get out, but she's doing much better now!

I'm sure you're right....it's definitely a battle of wills here ;)

(Re: the pooping.....poor little things! :( It CAN'T feel good to poop with an incision through your tummy muscles!! :( :( :( I just feel so bad for them and can't wait for them to be back to 100%!!!)

Hey!!! I hope Rylie is doing well?!!! Maya's incision is looking more like a scar now...and the scab over it is already starting to fall off too!! (her surgery was exactly 1 wk ago today) Yay!!!! Won't be long now and this will all just be a memory! :D

Rylie is doing really well! Her incision still looks like an incision, but she is feeling more like herself (which is both a blessing and a curse in her level of activity)!

I'm really glad Maya is doing so well! We're almost out of the woods! :D

I need to get my Bella spayed soon too!! Not to scare anyone, because I'm sure this just can happen from time to time.

I am petrified of having her spayed after my VERY large Rhodesian Ridgeback was almost lost during her spay. Her heart rate kept dropping and her temp dropped through the floor, after her surgery. She was very shocky and was kept for 24 hours to make sure she could stabilize herself. Getting IV fluids and medications, for the life of me I can't remember the medications. Vet assumed she was having a reaction to the anesthesia, worst thing in the world when you drop your baby off with a respected vet to get a phone call saying, OH by the way we almost lost your dog........she will have to stay with us for awhile to make sure she will be ok. I DID not go back to that vet, not that it was her fault, I just couldn't seem to shake the feeling that she did something wrong.

A year later, my son and I were at the store shopping, and we came across THE vet, and my son walks up to her and says. Hi there, my name is Carter, I met you once, but aren't you the lady that almost killed my dog?? Ohhh the innocense of children. :)

But, yes I will spay my Bella, I just have to get the courage up to do it.

Sue

Ohhhhhhh and IT IS GREAT your baby did so well with her surgery!!!!!!
