Mika is getting spayed today...
 

Hello, everyone! My yorkie -- Mika is getting spayed today... She is 7 pounds and she was sooo terrified when I brought here over there... Although I. Insisted that they keep her in her warm little house I am still worried if she feels alone... I didn't want her to have the surgery, but I read so many things here and over the Net, that it is a good for her health prosecute, that I decided to do it. She is only8 month. I do not know why I am so worried, but I feel awful! I bought her a doggy diaper, so she won't lick her stocked, plus I am a housewife, so I am with her 24/7...

Can you, please give me some advise on how to make her feel better? Vet said I can pick her up at 3 pm, but maybe it's better to leave her over there till 6? I will have her pain medication and everything at home, though. How about taking her to pee? She is outside trained... She refuses to do anything on her pad, although I tried to teach her to do it...

I'm sure your Mika will be just fine. When you go to pick her up, ask the vet any questions you have about her care once she is home. I think the vets appreciate it that you ask questions so that you are doing the right thing. She can probably go out to potty, gently walking, no stairs etc. But please check with your vet. You will probably be surprised at how quickly she feels better. First day at home is usually a little tough on them. Candy was walking around fine when I brought her home. My biggest challenge was keeping her from being too active and jumping. Ben, on the other hand cried like a baby when he came home from neutering. But by the 3rd day he was just like normal.

The vet should give you directions on after care. I did carry mine out for potty the first day home. They usually are not too interested in eating that first day either which is probably a good thing so that they don't get nauseous. Watch the stitches for any sign of infection. A little redness is not too bad but angy red -- I would call the vet. I was pleased at both Candy & Ben's stitches -- never even red. Just healed perfect with no sign of inflammation or infection. I did pay for pain meds to take home. Used them one day with Ben but not Candy. I went by how they acted to see if they needed them. I did not use a cone with either of them as they did not lick their stitches too compulsively -- a little licking actually can help them heal.

Believe me she will be fine sooner than you imagine. Presto was jumping from couch on second or third day after his surgery and i was in more pain than him checking his stiches after every jump :)

I'm sure Mika will be fine. More than likely she'll be sleepy for the rest of today. Just put her in a warm, soft spot and let her sleep.

If she wants to go outside to pee, then let her. I would carry her out and only put her down for a minute or two at fist.

You'll get feeding directions, but the main thing is to go slowly at first to make sure she's not nauseous. Our instructions were to give half a meal the first night home. I divided that up with just a couple teaspoons at first and then the rest later once I knew Scarlett could keep it down. I also bribed her a bit by making it all her favorite canned rather than the dry/can mix just to entice her.

The important thing to remember about pain medications is that they do a better job if given before the pain gets too bad (versus playing catch up). Scarlett needed them for the first 3 days home. By the 4th and 5th she was back to normal.

I didn't use a cone, but rather a onesie to keep Scarlett from licking. For her, it was 'out of sight, out of mind'.

Biggest thing to remember is that if you have any questions or concerns about how she's doing after surgery to call your vet or the ER. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks, guys! I just brought her home. She seems to be too playful, too fine! But she is really hungry. She just keeps begging for her normal dry food! I gave her some and she is great so far... At the moment she is sleeping on a couch, covered with a warm blanket. I think she is fine. She also went to pee outside. But I am still worried... I did asked the vet all the questions and sh answered them carefully. I have ER's phone just in case. OooH! I am soooo happy just to see her home!

I didn't buy onesies. I got doggy diapers, but the incision is too high for the to cover it! They do sell belly belts at Pet Supermarket. Do you think I should buy them?

I am glad she is home and resting comfortably. The onsies are the best for protecting the stitches, so if you can go get a couple.

So happy to hear everything went so well. I know just what you are going through as Lexi goes in tomorrow for her hernia surgery. I can't even think straight at the moment. And she is running around playing and just a happy little girl and I know what is in store tomorrow and my heart is breaking. Isn't it something how these little ones have captured our hearts. Hernia Surgery? Oooh... I hope your furry baby will be just fine! All those vet thing are just creepy. Even the annual shots...

You gotta keep me updated on this HernIa surgery! I will pray for you!

and I am with you the shots put me over the edge too :D

My daughter has a dog that had hernia sugery. It looked really bad, but, she came thru it just fine.
