The other two options the vet prescribes is Sentinel and Interceptor. Last year I remember getting Sentinel. The good thing about it is that it protects against Flea Larvae. Troy had a brief outbreak with fleas this past summer, so despite the extra cost I may choose that route then dab the pill with some cheese I know he likes. |
I have Scarlett on Heartguard and Rhett on Interceptor for the same reason. He wouldn't touch the Heartguard for anything (and Scarlett will eat anything that stands still, LOL). |
I give Rio and Bullet Sentinel wrapped in cheese! Almost everything tastes better wrapped in cheese! LOL! :D |
Neither one of mine will take their Sentinel so I stick it in a Greenies pill pocket. |
Revolution is the one I prefer because it not only is topical heartworm but also flea, tick and parasites protection, such as mites. It's prescription but I bring in foster babies into my home and my Vet thought my resident Yorkie needed the parasite protection as well as heartworm and Revolution takes care of it all and topical to boot. :) |
I melt a tiny bit of cheese, and place it around the Heartgaurd. I let it cool so that it's like an M&M candy, and the cheese can't come off. He swallows it whole with no problem. If I don't warm the cheese, he just eats that off. |
I have had some chew them and others not so much. I had to follow around so they would not spit part of it out. I decided the Heartguard pills were easier than the chewables. I can use my little mortar & pestle and grind the pill, mix it in a teaspoon or less of peanut butter (which they ALL love) and they lick it right away. No problems or worries! |
Rosie is on Sentinel. I have to hide it in her food to get her to eat it. She will not just take it without thinking she is getting a treat. So, I just hide it in her can food. |
Miss Daisy got to where she would not eat the Heartgard chewables, we tried everything to get her to eat it. She managed to pick it out of anything we put it in. We finally started dissolving the pill in water and giving it in an eye dropper, but this was an ordeal to give her. Her vet suggested trying ProHeart6, which is an injection given every six months. She does bloodwork and then gives the injection. Daisy received her 2nd injection yesterday. |
I am a firm believer in Revolution since it does work for fleas , heartworm, ear mites, hookworm and roundworm. |

I thought Proheart 6 was off the market. I have not heard of it being used in some time. You might want to google "Proheart 6 complaints" There were some major problems with it a few years ago with many dogs dying from that injectionj........maybe it has changed?? I don't know, but I would be very wary. |
Heartworm Preventive Mine get sentinel wrapped in a tiny piece of american 2% cheese. They scoff it down. |

Jackson will not take any type of pills or chews without food, lol. I generally wrap it in cheese, give it to him, and then close his mouth until he swallows, lol. |
Everyone that uses Revolution, is it worth it? My dogs don't really have fleas and if they do it is a few. But for the price of Revolution, it'd definitely be worth it to me to do this for Heartworms, Fleas, etc. that it protects against. I just want to make sure that everyone is having positive experiences. Thanks again in advance! |
I like using Revolution during the winter months because it protects against parasites as well, including ear mites. I take in foster dogs so I want my resident dog protected from things that normally I wouldn't worry too much about in the great White North off season. When summer hits tho, I'll have to change things because Revolution does not protect against ticks, and we'll go back to two medications. I like the idea changing it too so they don't become resistant to one of them. |
