Zyrtec - Any Long Term Effects? Coop Dog has been taking Children's Zyrtec before bed every night for his allergies, as per my vet. It seems to really be helping his licking/smacking lips problem. Are there any long term effects or reasons he should not be taking this? I imagine (and believe I have confirmed) that it is as safe for dogs as it is for humans, with no negative long term effects. But I just wanted to throw the question out there. |
Ringo takes it too ~ with no immediately apparent side effects. But he does not take it every night I'm curious to see what responses you get. |
I don't have any info relative to dogs, but I have researched daily, longterm use by humans of similar medications and didn't find any evidence of side effects. My father takes Drixoral or an allergy med similar to Zyrtec daily. I was concerned at first, but I found tons of anecdotal evidence of allergy sufferers who have done the same for 30 years with no ill effects. |
Lady has been taking Zyrtec per my vet for about eight years now. This was before Zyrtec was mainstream for dogs. My vet called the NC State Vet School for a recommendation for an antihistamine that was not sedating for a dog with a laundry list of health issues (epilepsy, diabetes, etc.). The pharmacist at the vet school recommended Zyrtec and Lady has been taking it ever since with no side effects. That was before Zyrtec was generic, too. I had to pay close to $90 for a bottle of 30 tablets! |

I take Zyrtec for my allergies and love it, didn't know you could give the child formula to dogs. Interesting, thank you. |
