Any safe treats at all for pancreatitis dog? Can anyone recommend a safe num-num for my girl? After 2 very bad cases of pancreatitis, she has eaten nothing but ID for over 6 months now, afraid to give her anything else, but when we come back from a walk, she still looks up at me expecting her treat, and I have nothing to give her except a kiss.. Thanks for any thoughts! |
Maybe you could PM member barney107 if she doesnt see this- she will probably have some good tips. |
We have a pancreatitis dog (not our yorkie) and we just give her kibbles of her vet-prescribed dog food as treats. She thinks it's marvelous (as long as it's not one of her tummy-hurts days). Good luck! |

You can make her treats from her canned prescription food. Shake the loaf out of the can, slice it thinly (about 1/4" thick), then bake it in the oven at 350 degrees on a cookie sheet for 30-45 minutes. (I keep checking until the center is set) |
I safely feed green beans to Barney who also has pancreatitis. However, green beans are a medium oxalate vegetable and could be contraindicated in dogs who are prone to calcium oxalate stones or crystals (bladder stones or crystals). Since Barney recently had some crystals show up in his urine and he has had a stone in the past, I am not feeding green beans any longer. He likes broccoli too, so I sometimes give him a small broccoli floret. I'm pretty strict with Barney - no bully sticks, no chews, no cookies that I can find in any store or on this website, or anything else. It is just not worth it. With that being said, there IS one cookie I will give Barney from time to time and it is the ONLY treat I will feed him. I know the owner of the bakery, and she discloses both the minimum and maximum crude fat in her products. The cookies are organic and made with local ingredients. There is not one other product I have seen that discloses maximum fat....they only give you minimums....so it's a guessing game as to how much fat there really is in there. Anyway here is the cookie I feed Barney - it's an occasional treat - no more than 2-3 cookies PER WEEK. You can order them online, Denise is fantastic. It is called Sadie's Slimmers and the crude fat is maximum 3% (minimum 2%). Barney's diet is 3% fat so this cookie fits his very low fat diet. Many dogs with pancreatitis are on higher fat than Barney but our vet nutritionist believes this is best for Barney. Many Rx foods are around 6% to 8% for pancreatitis and are not appropriate for our dog. Anyway here is the link to the Dogs in Harmony Bakery and again, it's the Sadie's Slimmers product I feed, and that is the only one Barney can eat. I buy the mini bites. She bakes everything fresh but they can be frozen if you want to store them. Dogs In Harmony - Organic Dog Treats |

Great - start very slowly with the treats to make sure your Zoey will be ok. Even my Daisy who has so many medical problems can eat this without any issues. But, you should start with only a couple of pieces. If in doubt, get your vet to take a look at the ingredients. Our vet was ok with me trying these with Barney but I was so nervous in the beginning. Anyway, we just ordered some bags too :) ETA: I forgot to add that I did not risk any treats with Barney until it was about 4 months after he recovered. |

Lettuce is very low oxalate if you stick with iceberg or romaine. Apples and pears are low also. |

more info, pretty please! Quote:
My little Bella was diagnosed with pancreatitis after getting really sick, which was one of the worse days of my life! So, I, like others, am trying to find some alternative treats for my pup. I did try the slicing of the ID canned food, and baking it, but it never got 'crisp'. Can you tell me more specifically how to cook them and what the consistency should be, please? Also, where should I store them? Cabinet or frig, and for how long are they 'good'? Also....if anyone can help me with this too.....I have tried to question the vet office as to how long the canned ID is good for in the frig since I only give her a small amount mixed with water and put it on her kibble for breakfast, but they couldn't give me an answer. Thank you for any and all help you can provide me. carrie |
