Eye Health question What do you use to clean their eyes with? When I got Max under his eyes was deep with matting. I tried a warm wash cloth to no avail. I ended up having to trim that hair out. I do not want this to happen again so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Beth |
Use a good tearless shampoo formulated for dogs to wash Max's head on bath days. I like BioGroom's Fluffy Puppy and I bathe my dogs at least once a week. I use a warm washcloth, or cotton ball, and small comb daily, or as needed, to clean under the eye. Pat the area dry with another washcloth or cotton ball. Moisture encourages the growth of yeast, the stuff that creates tear stains. Be very careful not to get anything in the eye itself. Only use sterile saline when necessary to wash eyes. |

Hi there fellow Texan!...I use Tropiclean D-Mat on my dog. I've only found it at Petco. It works great to clean the eye gook off and the water stains off the beard. It's also great to spot clean the dock area and the hair that tends to drag in the feces and urine with a yorkie in a long coat. Just spray a little on a cotton pad, wipe it on the area, "gently" comb, get another cotton pad wet with clean water, squeezing out most of the excess, to get out the D-Mat, and pat wetted area dry with another cotton pad. I'm very careful not to actually get D-Mat, shampoos or the conditioner I use in her eyes, as any type of product would prove to be very irritating, I would think. It doesn't seem to be a harsh product at all though. It is forumlated to be used on a dog's coat as needed for easy brushing and combing. Daisy's coat doesn't mat very easily at all....I use it to make the grooming experience for her a very easy and comfortable one. I use the D-Mat at bath time too (all over, including her face) after I have shampooed and conditioned her. It leaves her coat very easy to manage and comb pretty much the whole week. But on the third day, after she gets her weekly bath, I wet her down in the tub and spray the D-Mat on her to freshen her coat up , get any dust out and some of the natural oil build-up that tends to create "drag" in the coat when brushing. I HIGHLY doubt this would work for every yorky coat....their coats often seem to need something a little different.......but it works for mine. |
Thank you all for the great advice. I give Max a bath every 3-4 days, is that too much? He does NOT like a bath at all, I try to get next to his eyes and he really starts going crazy and it scares me that I may get something in his eyes. I am sure we will find a system that works. Between potty training and grooming, I feel like I have another full time job. LOL I sure do enjoy it though. I will check out the sites for more grooming tips too. Thank you for posting those. |
