New food for Schnauzer? A friend of mine just got a baby mini-Schnauzer (12 weeks old). I recommended that she let the puppy get used to her new surroundings before switching from the breeder's food (Purina Puppy Chow) but I'm wanting to give her suggestions for after that. Tatum eats Wellness Core but I'm wondering if that might be too high in protein for the Schnauzer. She said that she was told that Schnauzers can sometimes have colon issues (I'm pretty sure that's what she said). Is a high protein food bad for that?? Is there a particular food that is recommended for Schnauzers that anyone here might be aware of? I stopped researching foods a while back when I put Tatum on Wellness Core because she does so well with it.... so forgive me if something like this has been talked to death. ;) |
Correction.... her vet specifically said that they can be prone to pancreatis issues. I know that has been discussed here a lot so I'll go search some of those threads. |
Wellness CORE states on their bag to not feed it until 1 year of age. So I would pick something else to be safe. I don't really know anything about Schnauzers specifically. |
Hi, I am blessed to have in my life both a mini schnauzer and a Yorkie. Now my schnauzer does have some health issues (so I use raw)...but in terms of a good food for a schnauzer....the most important thing is to look for a good quality food with low-fat. Wellness core reduced fat has been recommended on my schnauzer forum for some dogs. But I'm not sure about a puppy. You might want to suggest another wellness formulation with the aim of less than 12% fat. Congrats to your friend on their new schnauzer puppy! Best breed, next to the Yorkie of course! |
