Amount of feeding for Orijen?
 
For those that feed Orijen - how much do you feed your dogs? Chip is about 7 lbs and Smokey is about 15. When I went on their website it said for between 2-12 lbs to feed 2/3 to 3/4 cups a day and for 12-22 lbs to feed 3/4 to 1 1/4 cups a day, which doesn't seem like enough to me considering they say to split that figure in twos so you can feed twice a day.

I feed Jackson, who is 15lbs, 1/2 cup per day of Orijen kibble. So 1/4 cup in the AM and 1/4 cup in the PM. He gets a bit of wet food mixed in each meal (maybe a spoonful). Sometimes I will replace his breakfast meal with pre-made raw and he gets 3 Primal nuggets and then 1/4 cup kibble w/ wet for dinner.

I find the bags tend to way over exaggerate the amounts needed, but it all depends on your dogs activity level and body type. Jackson is very very active and lean and muscular, but that's really all the food he needs. I leave out kibble for him all day and occasionally he will go snack on it, but even when he was totally free-fed, he self regulated at 1/2 cup per day or under.

Thanks! I have always free fed Chip and Smokey, so I have never actually measured their food out. They are really good at regulating when and how they eat, but when I switch them over to Orijen, I want to try and get them on a scheduled feeding. Smokey, like I said, is about 15 lbs. He's tall, long, and thin. I think he's bordering on too thin, but the vet says he's healthy and that it's just his body type... he almost reminds me of a mini greyhound type body. Chip is about 7 or 8 lbs but short and stocky but he's not overweight or anything. I gave both the dogs a bit of the Orijen 6 Fish tonight and they GOBBLED it up. Chip even took it out of my hand like a treat and he has never done that with his kibble, so I think we found a winner... although the 6 Fish smells like fish water LOL

LOL! Good. I love Orijen, I think it's a great kibble. Jackson would not touch the 6 Fish one, though, ha. He likes the regular adult and Regional Red.

Jackson is probably like Smokey. Jackson is naturally just pretty skinny, I think, but he's also super active too... so I don't know if the exercise is what keeps him thin, or what. I'll attach a photo of his body type. I always call him my mini Greyhound too because of how fast he is, lol. I ride along side my dads fenced in yard on the four-wheeler and he's gone up to 17/18mph!

Good luck w/ the whole food thing, I know how frustrating it can be to find "THE" food, lol. I think we've finally found it with Orijen/Acana.

Smokey is ridiculously fast too. One time we took him to this dog park and there were about 100 dogs of all sizes running around and Smokey was running around like a crazy pup. A bunch of dogs tried to play chase with him, but they all actually gave up and looked at him like he was nuts. His body type is similar but I think Smokey's chest actually is bigger and his waist is smaller... if that makes sense. I don't have any good body pictures of him cause his hair is too long, but I'll post the couple that I do have.

The first two are Smokey, the last one is Chippy. It gives kind of an idea of their body types. They aren't very active dogs though. They're really laid back.

Levi weighs 5.5 pounds and usually eats around 1/4 cup per day. He'd eat the entire bag if I let him, so we had to switch from free-feeding to measured feeding. :rolleyes: He gets 1/8 cup twice a day. I'll occasionally feed him closer to 1/4 cup, or I will feed him 1/8 cup three times a day, just depending on his activity level!

Good luck finding what works for your guys!

They're so handsome! Smokey actually reminds me of Jackson (if Jackson had longer hair!) This is probably the longest it ever was, not very long... lol

I fed my puppy Royal canin & Acana and he had loose and big stool, so i switched to Orijen puppy recently and it came out firm and small stool..anyone knows the reason? Is he doing good?

I'm starting the switch process tonight AND we decided to get both dogs on a feeding schedule... we'll see how the feeding schedule goes! LOL

Thanks! That helps in deciding how much to feed Chippy, who is just a little bigger than Levi. He ranges between 7-8 lbs.

Jackson is so cute! Love the picture! He does look a little like Smokey. I bet the two of them being the speed-demons they are, would have a blast together. Although, since Smokey's gotten a little older, he's less active. He'll be four in April and has calmed down some... but still, I bet if he had another active pup with him, he'd start flying.

I've been told that sometimes Orijen can make dogs poop a little less and when they do it is smaller and firm. I think it's because of the protein or the ingredients of the food, but I could be wrong. Maybe someone else can come on and answer your question better.
