1lb gain in a month? When I first got Layla she was 1.4lb at 9 weeks. She was then 1.7lb at 10 weeks. In a month she put on an entire pound! She went from 1.7 to 2.7lb (2.7 at 13 weeks). I weighed her today (she will be 14 weeks on monday) and she is a whopping 3lb when she's been with us only a month and a week. Is this alright? I noticed that as soon as we had her for a few weeks she became a lot more round. Looking at her now I can say she got bigger and fatter, too. Which, hey, is great because I am happy she is healthy. The only thing is I am worried that I could be over-feeding her. I am suspicious it may be the food we are giving her too. Currently she's on Little Caesars and Mighty Dog which I have learned is the junkfood of the dog world at my last vet visit. It was what her breeders gave her because she was a picky eater. I'm planning to switch her to Blue Buffalo asap, a proper puppy diet. She seems very healthy and is a good eater, at least with those foods. So is this ok? That's a lot of weight! What are your thoughts? |
I weighed my weekly early on (using a postal scale, so very accurate), just to make sure she was progressing. In one week she went from 38 oz to 50 oz. That's 3/4 of a pound in one week -- an increase of 31.5% in one week. Phenomenal! I brought it up with my vet (showed him my spreadsheet on the weekly weigh-ins, how geeky is that), and he just chuckled, shook his head, and said how incredible it was. There were a couple of other weeks where she had growth spurts in the double digit range in just one week, and this was all while she was getting her vaccinations at the vet, so the weigh-in results were verified by the vet. I would say that what you are seeing is just a growth spurt, very normal and just an indication that your pup is thriving! Kudos to you, you are obviously doing a great job in giving her what she needs. |
Sounds pretty normal to me -- yeah, the food you're feeding definitely is not the greatest, but I wouldn't worry about an overweight dog at that age. They're just growing puppies! Jackson was 5lbs at 9 weeks old, 6lbs by 12 weeks old, 8.6lbs by 16 weeks old, then 12lbs by 6 months old.. he's now 15lbs at 2years old and has finally stayed at one weight. He fluctuates between 15-16lbs. |
There could be alot of reasons. A good healthy growth spurt. Also, every once in awhile you'll hear of an unethical breeder who will underfeed and keep their pups tiny to try to get more money for them, then when the new owners get them home and start feeding them normally, their weight jumps up to what it should have been, and it's hello adorable teapot! But, yeah, a good quality dog food without all the unnecessary fillers would help. |
Maximo was still with his breeder from the age of 8 weeks to 13 weeks, and if I recall correctly from the pictures and weight indicated on them, he grew at the same rate as your pup. The best way to tell if your pup is proper weight is to feel the rib cage. You should be able to feel ribs without squeezing too much. |
puppy grows really fast.. |
